It's pretty straight forward, solve the night flight issue & trade will come.

Watty's hit the nail on head I think. It seems very short-sighted of Thanet to reject night flights when the potential economic benefits are taken into account.

Exactly what I said in post 9.
Here it is again:
I wouldn't be surprised if Infratil have given up because of the very unlikely chance of night-flights being allowed.
I know (obviously) I don't live near the airport so am not affected by the possible noise disruption night-flights would bring, but I do believe that the benefits have been massively underplayed by Thanet DC and the consultants and I know they are running a Consultation (now closed I believe), but I'm sure they will be losing out, by not allowing them.
If night-flights were allowed, expansion would take place and if the right routes were taken (if slots available at those destinations) it would benefit the whole of East Kent, including Dover (District) - if the marketing is done right.
From what I have seen, marketing is one thing that has not been done properly there, so a review of how it would be done, must be taken.
Very sad, but not surprising.

Has David Foley moved away from Dover Chamber of Commerce...he was certainly introduced as Howard notes there as being from the wider sounding Thanet & East Kent Chamber.
Kevin's post 16 sums it up for me too. Promise of new dawns etc but heard it all before. Yet the potential is there. Sad.

Straight forward, yes. But in East Kent, obviously not! Another classic example of failure, and one of the many reasons why I suspect potential investors give East Kent such a wide berth. Unless we are prepared to take a long, hard look at how we attract and encourage new economic development and jobs, East Kent will continue to decline at a rapid pace.

# 14.& 16...26 Agree...........East Kent could get second best again if night flights get go ahead...................
...........we really do have to get East Kent united as one .....then we will have some clout.........

I don't agree that night flights means East Kent gets second best. Permitting some night flights (with restrictions) will give the future airport operator (we hope!) the ability to attract new customers. For freight, airports have to have some degree of the flexibility so that time sensitive cargo is not diverted to other airports because of restrictive operating hours. It's that simple. Most of BA's cargo is carried in the hold of their passenger aircraft. However, they do lease a number of dedicated 747 freighters (three, I believe). They did consider moving to Manston some years ago but were put off by the restrictive operating hours. It would undoubtedly be a major coup for Manston to secure this business, and would raise the profile of the airport with other potential customers. It's clear that passenger operations will, at best, be limited at Manston but freight and possibly charter could work IF it is allowed to.

I read in the current issue of PE that TDC published a link on it's web-site to the airport's own version of the night flight consultation where Manston said; "your comments may also be forwarded to TDC" Note the 'may'.
