More bad news for East Kent - Manston Airport has been put up for sale by owners, Infratil. Hardly a sign of confidence in the prospects for East Kent. As I mention on another subject, investors are voting with their feet.

alternatively ramsgate residents could hold a referendum on whether to make it a people's airport.

We need to pull East Kent together with an East Kent Council...........they will have the clout of a KCC........

Paul.
Queston about Thanet.
They have just recieved £millions from HLF for Dreamland, yet they did not own the land, I know this is against usual HLF policy because i had to remove Disabled Parking from my application, due to not owning the land, how did they achieve this?

more of a question for ms bailes to answer gary when she logs on as she has covered most thanet issues.
getting back to the airport there seemed to be a difference of opinion over whether any expansion would bring more jobs for locals.
speaking from a failing memory a consultancy firm employed by thanet district council said not very many.

The HLF money won't be released until a compulsory purchase of the land has been completed. This is currently being contested by the owners and is the subject of a public inquiry, the result of which is due sometime before July

I wouldn't be surprised if Infratil have given up because of the very unlikely chance of night-flights being allowed.
I know (obviously) I don't live near the airport so am not affected by the possible noise disruption night-flights would bring, but I do believe that the benefits have been massively underplayed by Thanet DC and the consultants and I know they are running a Consultation (now closed I believe), but I'm sure they will be losing out, by not allowing them.
If night-flights were allowed, expansion would take place and if the right routes were taken (if slots available at those destinations) it would benefit the whole of East Kent, including Dover (District) - if teh matrketing is done right.
From what I have seen, marketing is one thing that has not been done properly there, so a review of how it would be done, must be taken.
Very sad, but not surprising.

the other roger was on the box yesterday being very bullish about the future of manston talking in terms of it being a future freight hub.
didn't seem very concerned about it being put up for sale.

Its a great pity this, some political heads were spinning it as an opportunity now that it has been put up for sale. Meaning that someone will come along and turn it into an international airport of serious level. But no...several compaines have tried now and got nowhere so Im afraid the news is gloomy. Nimbyism is very powerful in Kent, but it holds us back. Just think, international destinations on our doorstep and lots of jobs, fast links to London...its a dream scenario...but people wont grasp the nettle.

Some won't Paully.
Others just throw millions at the surrounding hinterland.

seems that i heard correctly yesterday about it being turned into a cargo hub.
the thought is that ba cargo will move all their freight to and from stanstead down here freeing up capacity for more passengers
if all this works then there will be no great need for a new airport.
charles buchanan chief executive of manston airport
david foley chief executive of thanet and east kent chamber of commerce, not that
he needs any introduction.

What a great pity this is, we had such high hopes once for the expansion of Manston Airport and what a great asset this would have been to South East Kent.
I remember just a few years back at precisely 11pm we would hear the roar of a freight plane fly over our house. It will be a great pity to hear just freight planes again with no prospect at all of Domestic flights from Manston. I for one will be sorry if BA move all their freight planes to Manston, we will have all that noise but none of the fun not to mention convenience of flying from Manston

I guess Stanstead/BA will be happy though.

indeed it will be a pity if passenger flights stop colette, but don't forget the massive number of jobs created if this goes ahead.
a local problem in east kent is a low skills workforce that could suddenly be confronted with opportunities for work.

Heard it all before! This is exactly what they said when Planestation/EUjet went bust and sold it to Infratil. They were going to create a freight hub then. Progress made, zero! In the meantime, Eddie Stobart has brought Southend airport, built a new terminal, added a rail link and easyJet are shortly to start flying to destinations throughout Europe. East Kent meanwhile continues to contemplate its navel! Amazing how some people who rely on our votes manage to see the "positives" in such announcements.

NIMBYs - it has been an airport for near on 100 years and the aircraft are a lot quieter than in the old RAF days !
Been nice knowing you :)

if someone buys a house close to an airport then they have to expect noise problems.
most people that live close to airports railway lines and motorways soon get used to it and when they move have problems sleeping because of the lack of noise.

People don't think that pushing away the quieter passender aircraft like the Flybe Dashes and 767s etc, will just lead to more freight traffic which WILL be noisy old 747s etc !!!!!!!!!!

Its a shame to hear this news having made the infrastructure around the airport so much better, it sad that no can seem to make it viable for passanger use.
To a degree Howard is right if you live near these places there is bound to be noise.
