How many people like me think this is holiday which ia waste of space .No sooner do we get over Easter and yet another day off work .Yet another at the end of the month .Its no wonder our country has gone to the wall
My elder son flew to North Norway yesterday morning to work there and today the younger son having only returned on Saturday from America is now on his way to Singapore ..
In my younger days a long time ago we never had all these holidays .
Who ever gets elected on Thursday /Friday let us see a return of aggod days work with a boost to our economy .
Yes its a Bank hoilday Monday and both of my sons are away working hard to sell British made machines .
There are too many people sorting paper and not enough of making things for export .
If I was standing to be a MP I would say bring back Pride in Britain ,
We must remember it is not a holiday for all , many people like to work bankholidays for sometimes double pay , also police , nurces etc have to work. I agree bring back pride in Britain .

we still get less public holidays than most other developed nations.
Some of us also do extra work at home because that is the way of our jobs, at our level. No double pay, no bank holiday rates, just the expectation that we will do what it takes to get the job done. Not complaining, though - I love my job! Just pointing it out...........

Blimey
Ok Sue your family are hard working Saints. We've got the point! Others like me enjoy the Bank Holidays it gives me another precious day with my 10 year old daughter as there is no school to attend. We all have a meal together relax, visit the boat show before I pack off the wife to work nights.
You're a long time pushing up daisies so enjoy a day off.If you think that by scrapping a Bank Holiday you will save this country forget it! You will do more harm to the morale of this country than good.We need time to forget about the scandals, the MP's,the Councillors who rip us off at every opportunity. The terrorists that want us dead, the tax man and the blinkin General Election.
If you really want to help the country get back on it's feet..campaign to scrap the £100 billion Trident farce .It would go a long way to wiping out our £146 billion debt ...so chill out in River (not part of Dover as you so Mrs Bouquet esque remind us often) where social housing was a relatively recent intrusion into your village life.(to quote you from another thread)
Give me a break!!!!

You take a break Marek .If more people did a hard days work we would not be in the mess we are in today .Look at the time the children have off from school .Weekends for you to enjoy with your sweet little girl.I dont think my parents ever shied from work .Dad worked every day bar Christmas .
Im now going for a stroll around the lovely area known as River .I will drop off a few leaflets on the way ..
Why the holiday is on a May Day socialist bank holiday goodness knows .

easter and christmass i beliuve.
Sue, I think you may have got a few hackles up, best rummage about and find your tin hat, I think you are going to need it.
UK Ltd doesn't need longer hours for its employees, less working time would get a better result. As mentiond previously, we get very short shrift in the UK when it comes to public holidays, we should have more.
I agree with reducing drastically the number of weeks schools are closed. Increase the term times and remover the stupid block on parents taking their kids on holiday when the time is right for them.
The mess we are in is due to the combination of capitalist fiscal mis-management, encouraged by Socialist fiscal policy stupidity.
Maybe the LibDems will win the GE, stranger things have happened.

Sue, I am sure you have gratefully taken advantage of these bank holidays since they were apparently introduced in 1971

"There are too many people sorting paper and not enough of making things for export"
What like Conservative literature?
I find it absolutely amazing that you talk about people producing things when you support an ideology that supports outsourcing. Primary industries were not valued in the 1980s so surely the destruction of secondary industries is the next step? You then you have the cheek to moan about a holiday that celebrates the rights and values the people who 'make things for export'. Of course the origins of this day lie within pagan Anglo-Saxon celebration, which in terms of heritage is more 'proud of Britain' than Christmas. In terms of International workers day, at least there is a significance of the date, which again is more than can be said for Christmas, which is merely an approximation of a date and probably one chosen to eclipse a previous pagan festival.
I would just like to make it clear I am not against Christmas or Christianity, but am against the views of some Dover residents (or River for that fact if you want to pretend it possesses independence) Please be clear this is a post against another post and not a post against religion!
Additionally just to prove this isn't a post against the Conservative party or the crippling of primary industry carried out by Thatcher's government: I like Mayday bank holiday because the 1st of May is my birthday....see I can think about myself first too, just like a Tory!
