Sorry to read this, it's very hard not to grove to a deep attachment with sich a pet - they give such unconditional love and devotion.
Having lost one pet that lived through from my school days, my parents' divorce and many moves I know a little of how you must feel.
You must bring another into your life as soon as you can.
My thoughts are with you both.
