A good solid win for the Conservatives, a gain from Labour.
Conservative 13,591 = 40% of the vote, majority 7,348
Labour 6,243
LibDem 4,803
UKIP 4,068
Green 3,350
Independent 963
BNP 941
5 other independents and weirdos between them 628
The turnout was 45%
The majority was better than expected and is significantly more than the Labour vote....
The seat has been Labour since 1997 and before that was gained by the Conservatives in 1983 (Labour held it in 1979)
The successful candidate is at 27 the youngest MP and the youngest ever Conservative woman. She is also a bit of a babe
(very bright and formidable too....)

Is this vote ladies and gentlemen, a vindication of Conservative policy Innovation or a more circumspect affair.

Like all by-elections it is a statement on the performance of this awful Government.
Remember the old trueism: Oppositions don't win elections, Governments lose them.
Lots of media reaction and it is all pretty much positive for the Conservatives and damning for Labour.

I cannot help but notice that Sid Pollitt makes some inane comment on another thread at 1 pm but avoids making comment on the electorates judgement of this failed government, obviously somethings are indefensible.

I cant be bothered to respond to him on that thread Ken, as you say, inane to put it mildly. Dont write off some further equally inane comments on this thread form that source, par for the course.
Sid Pollitt
Ken, is it? New are you, you'll catch on I'm sure. If I were to comment on this thread I'd do it when I had the time, not one that suits you or one that would need a Tardis. I think there was a byelection and something happened. I probably would make a comment on the sexist tone to the original post, is the anti-women type sentiment lead you to drop the Tories from your party Ken?

interesting when you read the vote a couple of times.
if you take away the labour vote, the assorted other candidates poll more than the conservative "babe".
it looks like the electorate are not that keen on either of the two major parties.
it appears to me that the knee jerk support of the reds and blues turned out, but no new supporters.

Fair point Howard. Although I am sure this is a fair reflection of the what the next general election will be like! Makes very little difference anyway. Since the Conservatives have been away Tony did a fairly good job of continuing the work of Mrs. T.
As for the Norwich North candidate, I've seen the film and I don't think you and Barry are being very fair to her... although I'm sure she is a Capitalist.

Sid, what is the old saying, 'vive la difference' - I dont and will not do pc, I leave that to you. She is a real babe and what with her and the other Tory lady candidates that are likely to win seats in the General Election, such as Ester McVey, we will have a much more photogenic group of 'Cameron Babes' than those awful 'Blair Babes' from '97. The only one of whom worth a second glance being Caroline Flint!
Howard, that is really scraping the barrel to try to downplay Chloe's victory. We had a 16.5% swing to the Conservatives from Labour with 40% of the vote. A good result by any measure. The turnout was slightly above average for by-elections since 1997 (42.5%) as well. I was pleased to see that the Greens were beaten into fifth place by UKIP. Given the Greens successes in Norwich at Labour's expense for the Council (forming the bigger opposition Party to the Conservatives) this has taken some commentators by surprise.

good try barry, you politicos can always summon up swings and things.
the vote was against the government not for then official opposition, as is evidenced by the votes cast for the greens, ukip and others

It was always the cards that the Tories would win ....so well done BarrysW lot. Every political would be pundit has been harping on about Browns 'last chance' but he continues to survive each problem because of all his faults(which we all have) he is a decent chap who is trying his hardest to steer the country through an unprecedented economic crisis.
I, like most others, have no idea how it will all pan out at the next general election. The electorate will decide between a front bench of Eton Oxbridge educated rich kids whose main aim is to lessen inheritance tax or a Labour party whose main aim is to put the country back on its feet.Time will tell.
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
So will we be electing a few Chippendales and BayWatch babes to parliament, given that photogenic superiority appears to be taking precendence over credibility? And no wonder given the poor performance in both from all main parties. Ok, I vote for Mr September.............

A Labour Party, Marek, whos utter economic incompetence has provided us with the worse recession since the 1930's. even the IMF have now indentified in their latest report how much worse the recession is, not only here but in other countries as well, as a direct result of Brown's 1997 banking regulation changes. Did you know that since Brown acted British banks lent US citizens the equivilent to 10% of the US GDP? That and worse happened in other countries too. So when the British Banks floundered and credit dried up it impacted well beyond these shores.
Bern - no harm in a bit of eye candy. There is a big difference though, the Conservative ladies did not get selected because of discriminatory women only short lists. One result is very high quality candidates with a great deal to offer. Tory totty has always been a cut above Labour wimmin in more ways than one

Keep going Barry it tickles me pink to see the true archaic misogynistic underbelly of the Tory party being displayed and glorified as you are doing.
Shame you do not apply the same bizarre logic to your male candidates - frankly they are a fairly plain, bland, beige bunch not a one who would make me look a second time.
But of course politics is above this as it is about ideas and the art of the possible, isn't it?

quite right ross.
we had blairs babes, now camerons crumpet.
the blues have simply borrowed the idea from blair to look like they are trendy.
the look of shock on the new mp's face when boy dave groped her after the result was priceless.
