We are at the height of the summer season. More than 63,000 people passed through the port on sunday alone, so yes indeed... life is very busy right now in the Port of Dover. They cope well with such a huge daily volume, as does Dover itself most of the time.
Of course as we have discussed often in the past only a small percentage of this figure of 63,000 will have stayed overnight in Dover, yet stay they do.
I live next to a hotel as many of you know, and they are doing very good business every night judging by the amount of cars in their carpark. I watch these visitors and they are thrilled to be photographed here.
They stand with the Castle as a backdrop and smile broadly..
"here's me in Dover mum"
then they stand with a Ferry as a backdrop and do the same thing, then they do it with the seafront statues like The Miner and so on. So its clear that people are excited when they reach Dover. They come from Japan, America, Europe and heavens even from England itself. One glimpse of the sea and its out with the camera.
So Dover does cause a flurry of excitement in the beating breast of the travelling public, okay they may not linger much more than a night in most cases, but they are glad to be here while they are here.
Something to build on for the future perhaps.
Do we still have a tourism officer? Lucrative business tourism.

Now there is a business opportunity for some enterprising soul.Set up an instant mobile Photographic studio..so that you and your loved one or indeed someone elses loved one can have their photo taken together by a professional photographer with a choice of backdrop..the Castle the White Cliffs or the Port in all its splendour.
No longer will there be a need to stop a passing stranger and give him or her a 5 minute lesson on how to use your newly acquired, state of the art, computer enhanced, million pixel laptop and Iphone friendly camera and then rush to your partners side for that all important dinner party talking point shot of your European whistle stop tour.
But don't do what the sharks did in the 70's outside Buck Palace and forget to put film in your camera....ahem

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

Don't suggest it to DDC, they would probably spend the next two years tourism budget on a feasability study.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Assume you mean Jon Iveson at Dover Museum - an extremely overstretched person, a museum creator being enough for one person in itself !!!

Isn't the visitors information centre in Dover housed in what used to be a tourist attraction?

are we to understand the the curator of our museum, who is up to his ears as it is, is expected to promote tourism to the town?
i must misread this.
one of our councillors will correct me on this.

yes Howard that is so.The Musuem Curator also deals with tourism. We astreamlined the council management some time ago.Cheryl Parker left us about two years ago.Cllr Scales is the portfolio holder for tourism.

is this the same councillor scales that was regularly posing for pics in the press, promising allsorts that did not come to fruition?
secondly the museum curator and staff are overwhelmed as it is, school parties, family days etc.
i think that when you say streamlined. you may actually mean under investing.

Certainly right howard, the museum is a massive job for one person, add to that tourism, add to that Western Heights, add to that having to be involved in developments like the historical elements of Connaught Barracks developments. A rediculous situation to be in ......

paul
this is the same group of people that promised that when they came to power in dover all these things would change.
the old town gaol open, the museum getting investment, the grand shaft opened regularly.
the truth is the opposite.
the staff at the museum must be at overstretched point.
i only go to the family days nowadays, the stuff they supply for the kids to knock up montages with can only
come from their own homes, stuffing from old mattresses etc.
they supply the materials, the kids make an almighty mess, while actually learning something, then the staff have the task of cleaning up the mess of paste, bits of wool and the like.
the whole thing has to be masterminded by the boss person, who then has to "run our tourist industry".!!
this sort of thing is never on the DDC website or reported on in the local press.

Im very aware of all the hard work done by all the staff at the musuem ,as I said earlier that comes under my remitt.I have to fit that in with my vast Housing Portfolio. If you read minutes or attended meetings you would be aware I voted against the amount of money being spent on Deal pier.I will always defend the musuem staff .Currently the staff are working on the next exhibition Toys.
