21:0277530Ray, sorry mate, but the participants on this thread have had to explain their views and knowledge more carefully, in order to be understood. Ross has done this quite well. If something is flung on a thread open to discussion, with people wondering whatever, then the solution and the scope of the discussion is to express the facts clearly for others to understand, else we needn't have a thread up on this topic in the first place.

21:0277531Charlie Elphicke is not participating in a sell off as it is not his to sell, it is currently a Trust Port and therefore the States to sell based on the recommendation of the Management Board and approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.
All that Charlie and the other committee members of the Dover Peoples Port Trust are doing is recognising that given the DHB have submitted a Port Revision Order request to the Secretary of State to allow them to put the port up for sale, that they need to mobilise if the port is to stay in local hands.
If the community and those of influence who want to see the port stay in local hands do nothing as you and Vic seem to be advocating then inevitably the Port will be sold to some foreign concern who will frankly pillage it for as much as they can make and all Mr Goldfields promises of community donations will be for naught.
Alex - by definition an "open evening" is just that open to all to have their say

21:0577534Ros. Incorrect. All members of the trust have equal single voting rights (I specifically asked about this as I was considering investing a lot more than £10 - I shall be leaving my money where it is!).
The trust, rather than paying dividends, will be giving money to the local community for projects (Minimum £20,000 in the first year) and if you have not paid your £10 you will have no say in where the money should go.

21:0677535I`ll be buying shares, and shouting to have rails relaid into the Marine station for the new cruise terminal and it`s passenger`s. And a coach at the terminal to drop passenger`s off in Dover if they wish. Why doesn`t business work like this? sigh.....
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

21:0777536Ross, may-be you do not know, but representations have been made to the Secretary of State for Transport. I won't give any detail here, but it is not a forgone conclusion that the Port of Dover will be sold. It so happens that I am not 'doing nothing' I am involved in the process!
This might explain a little, also for Ian and Ray, that Charlie is NOT the only solution to the whole question!

21:0877537Mr Elphicke in his own words saidhe can get half the funding from London and reading beween the lines the ferry companys support him and why because they will put money into that half and the ferry companys owners are all overseas ,one way or the other the port if sold will go overseas best it stays as it is.

21:1177540Colin, if it happens that people must pay in order to have a say in our future, then, please believe me, Charlie has got it all wrong! It will never function like that in our Country. I would suggest he looks into our Constitution, as, IF what is being stated here as you have been led to believe, it is certainly unconstitutional.

most people can afford a tenner, blue barry could probably stretch to twice that amount.

21:1477543Howard, That is the point! Well done there! I, in fact, cannot spare even a tenner at the moment. You certainly spelled it out in a few words!

21:2777547You must start saying to yourself at the time the blues are SAYING we must cut back and cut back we need more cash in the pot,yet they will let the port go for a song just £400million it is giving it away i had it done by a expert when Lord Pearson was down and was told "By just looking at the port by eye I would say the selling would be about 1.500Billion or even £2billion so why are they leting it go for less at the time we need more funds in the pot?

21:4877553we must also look at what has happen with the other big sell off that of the DARTFORD Crossing, for month the blues were saying it must be sold off,it must be sold off,we need the funding for the pot,Then Bang overnight they said no sell we are not now going to sell off the crossing,"Why"I say "WHY" JUST maybe it is the £6 or £7million it takes each week yes that is right £6 to £7million aweek,so they have been told we will get more funding by keeping the crossing, what has that to do with Dover?I will tell you, it is the same for Dover by keeping the port they will get more funding then selling it off. £400Million is nothing Football players get more then that.

21:5077554Vic, Valuation is based upon turnover and 'profit'. Last year C. £60m and £20m respectively.

22:0577562that is quite a good percentage of profit there against turnover, then port has a large number of staff and associated overheads.
having spent most of my life in the freight industry 33% is a good little earner.

22:5177588Bob, is Dover Port's turnover-profit ratio respectively 60 milllion and twenty million £ a year?
Do you have any knowledge if this profit includes calculating the pension coverage of the employees?
If you could drop a line or two about it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
