Have just read this article on the Dover Ferry Photos Forum. It concerns a cancer patient whose radiation treatment set off radiation detectors in the Eastern Docks.

I think these must be the radiation detectors. They were installed a year or so ago close to the Terminal Control Building, at the foot of the overhead roadway over which all freight and tourist traffic passes on their way from the ferries to the dock exit. I might be wrong but I have it in mind that these are radiation detectors to pick up dirty bombs being brought into the country by terrorists.
All traffic just drives straight through the devices without stopping. If the detectors can generate an alarm for the radioactive isotope in a cancer patient then it augurs well for picking up the dirty bomb for which they are intended.

Surely detecting a dirty bomb which has already reached Dover is a bit late?

Peter, I like it!
However, I`m sure that you must be guilty of some `ism or other with that type of joke. Can`t think what exactly, but I`m sure somebody can come up with one!

No, Brian, the radiological scanners in question have been installed in the last year or so. These will be passive devices with the radioactive substance generating the radiation field to be detected.
You are probably thinking of the gamma ray scanners which have been in use for several years for detecting illegal immigrants hiding in lorries. These use a mobile framework which passes along the exterior of the lorry and transmit low level X-rays from one side which are received on the other side to give an indication of the contents.

Dirty bomb detectors.
The first ones to be installed were at the approach to the inward freight lanes some 5 or 6yrs ago, the second pair were installed at the convoy exceptionel lane by customs at the end of the freight lane 1yr later. since then they have been adding as the dock exit routes change.
Hope that helps a little. and they have always been yellow.
The grey ones you saw Brian are electrical boxes.

Interesting this, because if he got through going abroad with this radiation, then he shouldn`t have been travelling anyway. Let me enlighten you. When I get radio therapy, I`m in for 5 days, and when I come out, I`m not allowed to stand next to anybody for too long, especially children or pregnent women for at least 4 days, as the human body is still radiating and you have the chance to sterilise someone. Also, not allowed to sleep with the wife for 4 nights, so if you read this, it shouldn`t be taken too lightly. If it`s similar treatment, then he should not be on any public transport.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

I think Peter can only be accused of having a good sense of humour - no "isms" as you call them.
When I first read your comment, I thought it was verging on the PC brigade type of comment - the "Thought Police" are closing in.
Roger
But why would anyone want to detect radiators, much less wear one when travelling?
