18:0511625Ray Haines has slipped away after months of quiet suffering. He was a true supporter of Dover despite living in Thanet. As Chief Executive of Dover Chamber he was a larger than life figure representing local business. On a personal note I appreciated his forward thinking outlook.
Barry will no doubt give a more expansive business & personal appreciation.

20:0711636Blimey, wasn't expecting that seeing and hearing from him on the news recently. Never quite saw eye to eye with him, but was a good man. RIP

20:1611640Seldom agreed with him but always found him to be amiable, approachable and willing to listen. R.I.P Ray.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

23:3911654Sadly, another of life's true gentlemen has left us. I don't think he ever got over his wife's death last year.
Sadly missed.

09:0611662Ray had been undergoing cancer treatment for some time. The last time I spoke to ray was in early December and he did look pale and tired. I was concerned then but did not say anything.
He was a first class Chief Executive for the Chamber and a great champion for local businesses right to the very end. He will be deeply missed and a very hard act to follow.
RIP

09:3111663This is a great shock to me, I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. I didn't know he was seriously ill.
I had the greatest respect for Ray - his views weren't always popular with some people, but he was a great strength to the Chamber (of Commerce) - I wonder what they'll do now ?
I wonder what will happen to his vision of a quality Hotel on the Western Heighhts - that was moving slowly forward.
He was indeed a great supporter of Dover and helping and advising the businesses here; he worked tirelessly for the Town and District.
Even when his wife was seriously ill, he said the way to get through the pain, was to take his mind off it by working.
I've known Ray ever since Jean and I moved to Dover in November '94 and I joined the Chamber and soon afterwards, put myself forward to stand on the Board and worked with him and the other Directors for many years until we sold the Guest House in 2002.
I still kept in touch on a pretty regular basis, I had a good chat recently with him about Dover Town and the need for a (nother) business support body being set up - which he fully supported; I also received his monthly newsletters.
A good man, a gentleman and one who will be sorely missed by the Dover Chamber of Commerce and its members.

12:1811673As vice President of the chamber before Ray started I was keenly aware of the Challenge he faced in keeping it effective - he did an amazing job through difficult times - but kept his focus on the needs of Dover. We have lost a champion!

08:4411988Sorry to hear this sad news too. It was only recently we had a picture of Ray and also a picture of Nigel Collor across the top of our frontpage. They had been on television discussing Dover's plight in the wake of the strike, I think Im remembering that right. People who stand up and make a contribution to the community are to be admired.
Well done Paul W for bringing us the story. Ive only seen it right here.

04:0212048Sad News about Ray, he was a supporter of DCAL from the beginning and was supportive of many of our events.
Our thoughts are with his family at this time, and his many friends who will miss him. RIP x x

09:1512105Ray's funeral is to be held at the Thanet Crematorium on the Manston Road (CT9 4LY) on Thursday, 15 January at 1.20 pm. There are to be no flowers but donations may be made to the Pilgrims Hospice at Thanet.
The Chamber has been asked to let Ray's sons know the approximate number of people likely to attend.
