08:1915984I'm not sure if this should be in this "political" section, but:
Forgive me for being a little old-fashioned, but why have we taken over responsibility for this Ethiopian, now that he has been released ?
He isn't a British subject, he was just living here - illegally as it happens and was a failed asylum seeker.
I can't believe that we should take over responsibiity for him from his native Ethiopia - he's an Ethiopian subject, not a British one and was found fighting with the Taliban.
We talk about Human Rights, but what about responsibilities ? what about Ethiopia's responsibility to one of their subjects - this guy ?
We must be mad - can you imagine it happening anywhere else in the World ? nor me !

08:4115985You are not being old fashioned Roger, you are just saying what is right. We have no responsibilities for this man, far from it.
He should be handed over the the authorities in Ethiopia and be dealt with in whatever way they see fit. Full stop.

17:0216008Well I agree chaps with the above sentiments. I was convinced all along that this guy had been born here following all the news bulletins, but then they slipped the Ethiopia bit in under the radar sort of thing. This is a clear case of media hype. This story has been selling newspapapers all along because everyone thought the guy was British. People are much more interested then, its like a 'Brit wins Wimbledon' type of thing. Great news story!
Ethiopian wins Wimbledon is not a story...it might be in Ethiopia. So the whole thing is just a tad weird.

18:4516010Maybe this post by Roger is a joke. I say that because I found the post in the Jokes section regarding an asylum seeker quite offensive.

18:5716016he was a failed asylum seeker that admits to getting involved with drugs.
whether he was with our taleban chums, nothing has been proven yet.
his CV doesn't look very good though.
no doubt a QC on legal aid will sort out his future here.

19:1616018We'll have to see what is the case with this guy who's just returned. The so called joke about asylum seekers was not 'too close to the truth', it was distasteful and offensive. From an elected representative was also worrying and I feel it should be withdrawn and an apology issued.

19:2816019The joke was not at your expense so there is absolutely no need for you to be offended except in the strange and weird neverworld of the politically correct. Like I said, get over it.

19:3116021You have to admit though BarryW, it is a disgrace. Be fair, there is a line and Roger went over it.

19:5416023Had Sid not brought attention to Rogers joke I doubt whether I would have read it
I personally thought it quite funny and was not the slightest bit offended.
Barry the PC brigade live in alittle world of their own in which they are the sole guardians of what and what not we should say.
As far as the Ethiopian is concerned he is still an illegal immigrant and should be sent back. Why should we water and feed him?

20:0316024I know I object to low level Harry-style racism but the post by Roger was far worse and went over the line. For one thing he mentions skin colour. If no stance is taken against this type of thing then anything goes does it not, and do we really want elected councillors setting such a bad example?

20:4516030The jokes page is a quietly successful page with more than 10,000 viewers so far, so people are liking it. We have, its true, had some complaints before from members of the public about some of the content. My feeling is, and nobody is ever sure they are 100% right on things like this, but my feeling us that they are jokes and most people just see them that way.
The complaints before were because of the sexual nature of some of the jokes but as long as we dont go totally too far then I think its okay. But of course there would have to be a line at some point and when we see it we'll know I reckon.
In the case of Rogers one, well I thnk its okay and funny, but of course I wouldnt like anyone to be upset with it. There are often Irish jokes on there that dont show us Paddy's in a good light either but I always take them in the spirit of fun myself, but I am sure there are others that wouldnt. But there we are, this is really of the same nature of the problem as discussed on the Paki thread.

22:5216038No Sid, it is not a disgrace at all, its is just a joke and a good one.
Not a bad example
he did not cross a line and so what if he mentioned skin colour, different hues of colour are a fact of life.
Its po faced political correctness that crosses the line and is a disgrace.
Some people need to find a sense of humour.
The great thing about the Irish, Paul, is that they have that sense of humour. Did you read Frank Carsons excellent article in the Mail and some brilliant Irish jokes? As he says its you Oirish who tell the best ones about yourselves!

don't forget that a lot of irish jokes originate from dublin and cork and are aimed at the rural people in places like county kerry.
when jewish jokes were the rage, it was mostly metropolitan jews that made them up.
i don't mean the really unpleasant ones, just the take on jewish life.
a great example being the one about the mother buying her son two ties for his birthday(one red and one blue).
the son nervously puts on the red one, the mother then screams "what's wrong with the blue one"??

07:5216061Not true of this one howard...
At a packed public meeting in Belfast a tub thumping speaker was roaring....
'I was born a Protestant, I was educated a Protestant, I live as a Protestant and I will die a Protestant'
Seamus from the back of the hall loudly shouts - 'Have you no ambition?'
That was one of the many told by Carson but as he says its how I tell 'em.....

09:0516071I'm sorry Sid, but if you found that joke (and that's all it is - intended to make people smile or laugh) offensive, then you must have a gene missing.
