16:2533251I remember his first great role, as Callan. He was brilliant in that, never seen it repeated on the digital channels, perhaps it will now.

18:4633274Yes I go as far back as Callan although I wasnt a particular fan of it..but it was very popular. My brother, and this is way back in my days in 'de emerald oisle', used to love it.
There was a delipated little miserable smelly guy in it called Lonely, who used to work for Callan who was something shady from the Intelligence Services. The whole thing was an exerciese in the downbeat. Edward Woodward was very well liked and went on to do a number of very successful parts, culminating in The Equaliser.. This Equaliser programme was quite brilliant for a while but unfortunately in time fell victim to political correctness in the USA and everything was softened up so that it became a kind of " My uncle Equaliser!"

20:3833281I remember watching Callan when I was a lad, there was one particular episode when Edward Woodwards character was painting figurines (not to be confused with toy soldiers) and I was chuffed to bits I had the same ones!
I agree with you PaulB the pc brigade ruined The Equaliser it ended up a bit like My Favorite Martian. Edward Woodward R.I.P

21:1633294Sadly Russell Hunter who played Lonely died about five years ago. He was a very good actor - I briefly met him in 2003 in London and had a chat, he was a really nice fellow, very down to earth and full of funny stories.
I vaguely remember getting hooked on Callan when it was repeated in the very early days of Channel 4. Sadly some of the earliest black and white episodes from the first couple of years have been wiped and are gone forever, like so much television of the era.
