Whilst shopping in the High Street today we were impressed with the public spiritedness from a member of the public who spotted some shoplifters at work, she immediately notified the staff of a family of shoplifters who had lifted items and secreted them in a baby buggy. Her description of all three family members was spot on and whilst we were running an errand just beyond the Charlton Centre we saw the 'chuckling families' laughs came to an abrupt end when a police car took them in for questioning.
A Big Well Done to the passerby who gave an extremely accurate description and the speed of the police on their positive reaction.

Bravo Joe Public and the Police.
So items nicked will be confiscated and the family will get a slap on the wrist and sent out to repeat the offence I suppose!
A group photo on every shop window might go down well though!

They have photos of those barred for stealing, on the door of Costcutters (the Post Office) in Pencester Road, so I think it's a good idea.
Roger
Doesn't that impinge on their human rights, Roger? I'm sure there is something in the EU legislation which is meant to protect the scum from being publicly named and shamed.

i often wonder about those pics, were the culprits arrested, charged and convicted?
if not, the shop could be in big trouble.

Surely they can bar anyone they wish to ?
The photo is there so the miscreant can see him/her self and know they can't go in there.
They've been barred for a reason, not because they've got a big nose or ginger hair ( yes I know, every one then says "what the matter with people with bog noses or ginger hair" ?)

If you had a 'bog' nose Nigel Collor would probably have you closed down.

the point is that a conviction would have to take place before any naming and shaming.
anyone can put up a pic of someone they don;t like and accuse of them of a crime, for instance that chap that was named on facebook as a child molester, house attacked, children abused, wife left him.
turned out he was completely innocent, the person who made the accusation was a neighbour in dispute with him over a garden fence.

I always try to check my spelling before I post, but the "bog nose" even raised a laugh with me, so thanks Andy.
If you are in Pencester Howard, take a look and see what it says on the poster on the door.
Roger
I have a real issue with the whole public humiliation thing. There are clear uses for it, and it may be helpful in some cases, but it is so open to abuse and error. Once something is "out there" it is there forever these days. That doesn't offer any opportunities for personal growth and change.

Then people should appreciate that there is always a consequence to their actions - good or bad Bern, so if people are going to be awful, others will know about it.
Roger
I couldn't agree more, but there has to be a limit to the retribution and longer term consequences, a time when the due is paid and the person can move on. In this internet age that is more difficult.

ok roger i will check tomorrow, but i am pretty sure it said nothing about arrests and convictions.
What about slapped wrists and a polite request not to do it again? We wouldn't want to offend their sensitivites now would we?

Depends on the severity of their crime; some deserve the longest sentence and severest retribution - and punishment, they have to be punished for what they've done - don't they Bern ?
