16:277612There are endless caves under the town used as shelters...
From the Grand Shaft to Historex, from the swimming to the Eastern Docks, Durham hill and a lot more !!!
What sort of access do you require, timescales, numbers, area of tunnel, purpose ? I am sure I can point you in the right direction......
Been nice knowing you :)

18:207621The George Cross for Dover Campaign is looking to hold a sponsered fund raising event over one weekend fairly early in the new year. In order the emphasise the point of the campaign by living in one of the caves for a weekend, dressed in 1940's style and eating 1940's food (spam sandwiches etc.). A concession to modern life, and modern health & safety regulations, would be the addition of a portaloo. Space outside would be needed for cars, the portaloo and we hope well-wishers and sight-see-ers, and who knows maybe some media coverage. The funds raised are to help publish tourist information to promote the towns history and to push ahead with our proposal for a memorial and small memorial garden to be attached to the St. James Church to keep it as a living and permenant memorial to those who lost their lives in the town during the major conflicts of the last century. All offers of help and ideas are always welcome (as would be a link to our website Paul hint hint).

18:467622Perhaps a good idea for a photo opportunity. I can ask Miss Dover to come bring you all some Spam.
Not wanting to coin a phrase which Terry Nunn probably hates, but " EVERY LITTLE HELPS"

They are quite dangerous after the major fire a few years back, and Hammonds are rather OTT with health and safety !!

15:157675There are also caves and tunnels under the Flotilla - or Dover Tavern/Guildhall Vaults in old money - running up to the Western Heights.

15:577678"...quite dangerous after a major fire a few years ago" You must mean May 23rd 1965.
I wasn't suggesting going there again Paul. I meant helping with what little expertise I had.

19:527693Thank you all for your assistance. Paul, thanks for the information and I will email you shortly and Terry, I think Stewart and Jeanette already have plans for you but nothing too arduous. For those that follow these things our campaign had it's first AGM on Tuesday and, as Maggie SK had asked to step down as Vice Chair although remaining a valued committee member, we now have a new Vice Chair..................Jeanette Harper (gives the lads something nice to look at while I am talking). For the rest it is still me in chair, Stewart D (looking good in a skirt and his shorthand is improving) as secretary and the over energetic Geaorgette Rapley as treasurer. The stalwarts of our full time committee, with the addition of Maggie and Simon, are still, Brian Dixon, Alan Taylor, jean Cooper and anyone else we can coerce into helping us out.

23:427711There was a cave shelter on the edge of what I think was the Girls Grammar sports field to the left hand side of Charlton Cemetery.
That's if it is still there have not been up there for years.

The fire I saw was 17th March 1995 - hammonds had the place stacked floor to ceiling, wall to wall, with tinder dry packing pallets that went up. A lot of damage caused then !
