20:289353our mp led the initial fight against the harbour board, i doubt that anyone would have been treated badly because of
their political allegiance.
there were all sorts of banners at the rally.
we have had the view of the leading conservative on this forum about the situation.
i cannot see barry lending his support to the workers, he has made it clear that it is in the best interests of dover.

20:549357Who said anything about treating Tory Councillors badly?
I was surprised (pleasantly so) to see Charlie Elphick there, it showed he cared.
It was equally great to see ordinary towns people there
Oh and no one was checking party or union cards before you could listen, clap, show support etc.

21:489359If you read JHG's posting, this is not how it came across Ross. It was though Charlie wasn't welcome there.
Perhaps it was the way in which it was written and not meant to have been like that, but it did come across that way.
Quite rightly so it should be a solid show of solidarity for these workers, not a scoring session for the politicos

22:019360Mandi,you know me,I have always wanted the best for this Town,I have worked for the railway for 35 years,if what the DHB bring in,it will happen to everyone else at DHB and then it will wangle its way into other industries. These people are Dover people and proud of what they have done while working at DHB,I met people who had worked for them as long as I had for the Railway, some I didn't know many I had played football with and against, they feel that if we let this go,many will lose everything they have worked for.
I have respect for Charlie and we always have a chat, yes politically and socially we are opposite ends of the spectrum, you know me I talk to everyone and anyone sometimes too much, but the Political Leaders of Dover should have been there and Charlie was,but where were the other Councillors, there were Town,District and Kent County Councillors there but they were all one colour,if Bob Goldfield wants to listen then we should all be there,if he doesn't listen then we should be there every weekend until he does, solid together everyone.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

11:269440Ive just seen the picketing workforce at the eastern dock entrance about 50/60 strong with banners ablazing. Its a grim damp morning with not much cheer. Whether their strike action has caused any disruption its hard to tell, as its not immediately obvious. Everything appears to be running as normal.

19:419459Nice to be given a load of verbal walking out of the docks on my way home today. Perhaps this would make sense if I was actually a port worker employed by DHB, but I'm not and have never been. I suppose the abuser just assumed I was.

21:489465it might have been an idea to wear a "scab" t shirt phil, it would have given you time to get clear while everybody discussed the issue.

12:029482What you might regard as scab labour are people who are benefitting Dover by keeping traffic flowing. Personally I am glad of it as I hope that it would limit any wider damage done by a strike.

12:569485By bringing in men from Sheerness, is not helping our corner, our men, if our men lose their jobs, Sheerness men will gain, they are already fighting for contracts, that our port might be losing

13:399487Barry you discredit the Party you purport to support, have the courage of your convictions and go down to the picket line and tell them your feelings and the reasoning behind it. However, I do hope you are a strong swimmer.

13:529490I have just come back after spending an hour on the picket line, there were about 40-50 people there, with the Police in attendance, the spirit of the strikers is high, but they have been moved to where they are not stopping any traffic, what suprised me most was the support they are recieving from passing cars and trucks who beep thier horns, that was quite incredible.
The only trouble was apparently one man came out of a near by house and wanted to take on the Strikers silly thing to do throw a punch when there were 50-60 strikers, but it was ended quickly and I am told that none of the strikers joined in.
There pickets outside Harbour house as well,TV camera or security cameras were filming as well,as they were so far away I guess they were not TV cameras.
Heart warming the Sprit of the people and the amount of support the were getting.
