There's a little gem of a story in the Dover Express(p7) about a fallout between DDC Cabinet members over a loo closure in Russell Gardens, (wherever that is!?)
Yes our very own forumite, Sue Nicholas, has had a bit of rumbustous blast at still forumite, ermm I think, the silent Nigel Collor.
" I am very cross " says Sue and lets face it none of us want to see a very cross Sue Nicholas...especially when she needs to spend a penny in a hurry.
If Sue wants to spend a penny in Russell Gardens well she should be darn well able to.Yes quite right too. But it seems Nigel, who is responsible for such savoury aspects of DDC life, has shut the Loo down in an effort to save a few bob for the cash strapped DDC coffers.
"Its in a dingy corner!" says Nigel, grappling around for an excuse.
The Dover Express shows a picture of the sad looking toilets all boarded up and miserable. I will go one better and show a picture of Sue and Nigel about to be boarded up and miserable on a new bus, or perhaps it was in former happier(!!) times.

Ah still.. they make a nice couple. Have you noticed the way Nigel's tie and Sue's jacket are a matching set...and they say colour co-ordination is dead!

In 1750 an Irishman invented the toilet........

I'm flushed with embarassment over that joke..to think that the Oirishman forgot to put a hole in it...well I never!
Our local Tory frontbenchers are very quiet on this issue. Their silence thunders loudly. No bogs in Russell Gardens. As Jan says..is this the thin end of the wedge ? Are the Tories hellbent on cuts. Are we to be caught short all over! I suspect it was this cut philosophy that led to the poor decision on the Miner statue. Pretty soon when you go out for a park day ramble you'll have to bring a little shovel with you so you can dig a hole in the ground. But watch those nettles. We used to always have a problem with nettles in Ireland!!
Nettles and thistles, if I remember rightly. Those were the days..........

Paully B, you are a stirring ol'devil.
I understand the loo concerned was closed about 9 months ago.Other than recent belated article & comment , no public response up to that date. It is a cesspool system with no electricity installed [therefore no lighting or hot water], I understand & has an earth path to access it. Useage was minimal. Whereas across the road at Kearsney Abbey are modern WC's .

Miner's statue is, as Gary Cox has eloquently described in this Forum. Frankly I have no preference to where it goes or stays. We responded to the public. We consulted & consulted & consulted, to no avail or response from some. Other than insurance premiums which remain with DDC, IT CONSUMES NOTHING.

The miners statue should be on Deal seafront. Far too hidden away at Betteshanger...sorry, I meant the weakly re-branded 'Fowlmead' (yuk name that smacks so much of dreary executive homes on a boxy Barratt estate - lacking all the hardy, Kentish, historical poetry of the word 'Betteshanger').
But hey, what do I know...
Kearsney loos are unpleasant...rarely any soap, rather grubby. But better than cesspool and no electricity, I guess! Having said that........Kearsney and Ruff are both attractions and both need facilities, espesially for peop,e with mobility issues or young children.

'Fowlmead' is the name of the farm that stood/stands near the site.....
It is becoming quite a popular site

I assume the Kearsney toilets are unaffected? They must be at least three minutes walk away from Russell Gardens. From Paul's description the Russell Garden toilets sound akin to a potential health risk in a redundant, rotting, dark edifice, so maybe it's a good thing they have been closed.
I really fail to see what on earth the miner statue has to do with the toilet closures, that's really trying to fit a round peg into a square hole here. Sorry.
