why would it cost us money to withdraw from the european union?

Totally with you Phil.
We need a new settlement with the EU. The present one is not right for this country.

barryw, either you are fully in or you are fully out,its no good sitting on the fence moaning.some sort of motivation is needed to sort whatever problems out and make it work for us.

If that is the case then Brian, better off out. The EU has gone too far away from the trading block that I supported and campaigned for in the referendum in the 1970's.
The truth is we can get a new relationship as part of the wider European economic zone along with Norway and Switzerland for instance.

barryw, maybe so but at wot cost to the tax payers of this country, wot are the inplications of opting out how much is going to cost us.the alternative would be taking the plunge by fully joining and working on wot benifits we could get by being a full member rather that sitting on the fence as we are now.working on the theroy of working within to make changes to benifit us as a nation of proud people.as i see it at the moment we are the dinosaurs of the eu with our heads buried in the sand.

No cost Brian - it would save £billions. dont for a moment take any notice of idiotic scare stories the Eurofanatics peddle about lost jobs or trade, the opposite will be true. We just need to self confidence to take our future in our own hands as an independent country once again.

Well do we stay in, do we get out?
how many friends/traders will we have if we pull out?
will we survive?
i'm not convinced

Keith - we are a net importer from the EU. To suggest they would place that trade at risk by limiting our exports is to ignore commercial reality.

barryw,we may be a net importer at the moment.
but dont forget we are in a resesion for the time being.
when we wernt in a resesion our imports exceded our exports,
and our gdp wasin decline and the debt was riseing.
now its in reverse you are moanig about it.

Brian - dont mix up our trade with the EU with the rest of the world..... We have rarely been a net exporter to the EU.
The recession is irrelivant, after all you Labour people like to point out it is worldwide....

sorry barry, you are right on the european union, but dragging it down to party level is low quality argument.
the simple facts of the matter are that
1) both major parties have no intention of standing up to brussels.
2) trade will not be affected by us leaving the union.
people buy and sell on price, quality and delivery times only.
any one of our truckers that post here will confirm that delivery times within the eu are red hot.
most importers operate a "just in time" policy to save on warehouse costs and cash flow.

Howard
Im afraid I cannot agree that the UK will not be affected by leaving the Union
I think we will.
Needs a lot of consideration, and checking all the facts

My un-informed opinion has, for a number of years, been that we should either go the whole hog with Europe (all the way in) or pull right out as Brian Dixon suggests. Any sort of a compromise with the EU as it is now constituted just doesn't sit comfortably with me at all.
I don't understand Keith's economics of pulling out. Why would it cost the UK anything to pull out? Surely we would be saving the millions of pounds we pay into the EU every year and then have to fight tooth and nail to get just a little of it back? To simplify things in the way BarryW did earlier and put it into a domestic context; if I leave a club to which I pay an annual subscription then I can put the money to a different use, say to paying off any debts I may have. I just cannot see what benefit belong to the EU club has for this country.
Howard: "Just-in-Time" is indeed the name of the delivery game these days. In many cases a delay of even a few hours can bring a production line to a grinding halt (why do you think truckers get so frustrated with Op. Stack?). A manufacturer's warehouse is on the road! And don't even think about arriving early for a delivery - they won't have the storage capacity to take your load ahead of time either and you'll just have to sit outside the depot until your delivery time.

PHIL
I have no real strong views on europe and the EU
but would rather have all the facts rather than what may be speculation.
It needs a lot of talking through with other countries making sure we dont isolate ourselves.
