19:1541029Back in 82 I was in America with my Grandparents and we went to watch a Live TV show called the Bob Braun Show and they started talking about the upcoming Falklands crisis. On the show they had a fortune teller for the use of a better word, and she proudly announced that nothing would happen it would all be settled.(Wrong)
My Grandad was a desert Rat who fought in North Africa for the whole time WW2 was being fought in that area, then went in Italy where thay worked thier way up Italy until they got held up at Cassino.
Before they coukd ask the psyic what would happen, they said actually we have some people from England here and swung the cameras round on us,My Grandad said go and get it back what ever the cost.I surprised them by saying that the Falklands is sitting on one of the biggest untapped oil wells in the world, and the Goverment at the time were more concerned by the oil than the people on the islands.
Yes they are British Citizens and yes we should have gone, but was there a hidden reason for going was in just about being a British subject?
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

19:2041030All of the above JHG. Incidentally, my English Uncle was in North Africa too. Traumatised but triumphant, he willingly fought for his country, and was never the same again. I have no doubt though that he would have done it again if necessary.

22:2941039the oil was discovered 12 years ago, argentine knew about it then.
the price was about 10 dollars a barrel.
they have gone all dewy eyed with patriotism now that the price is about 75 dollars a barrel.
time for a strong naval presence i think.

12:3341063looks like it could pan out that way, so many problems will be put in the way of the drilling cmpany by the argentine government that the costs could outweigh the gains otherwise.

15:0341064Comon sense would dictate a joint operation, BritArgoil Ltd, with both parties getting a 50/50 slice of the pie. It amy also build a few much needed bridges between the nations.

I did mention this possibility of a joint operation in my posting #15. It could be the way forward.

23:5241075It is ridiculous posturing - bear in mind that the Falklands are over 300 miles from the Argentine coast, way outside any coastal or territorial waters
