19:1515952In these days of doom and gloom it was pure joy to see a film that was wholly financed in this Country win 8 Oscars.
The young cast were a credit to anybody and Dev Patel a virtually unknown actor is everybody's idea of a hard=working teenager.

20:1215963i saw kate winslet this morning accepting her gong.
it is lucky she is an actress and has scripts, she seems incapable of stringing two words together on her own.
that danny boyle film seemed to attract a lot of controversy, accused of glamourising poverty.
any comments from the people here that have seen it?

23:1315978It was an okay film...overhyped as ever!
The children in the film really did and still do live in the slums and there was a fair amount of disgust on the tv about the fact that they were all flown over here and decked out in posh suits for the Brits when they really just needed the money to buy some food!

05:2415979not totally true Jeanette...as Danny Boyle has set up a trust fund to ensure that all the kids used in the movie receive a sound and good and paid for education.

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

06:3115980It sounds as if opportunities are being created, for education as well as new experiences such as being "decked out" and attending the Oscars. As on other threads, there are always people to complain, even when things are being achieved.

09:4515989And the kids and their parents don't seem to know anything about this trust!
Trust or not, glitzy parties like the Brits are a complete waste of money....especially to the people in the slums!

10:0815992it seems to me that the trust is a sensible way to reward the children. Like the old saying, give someone a bowl of rice and you feed them for a day, give them a bowl of seeds and you feed them for life.
Taking the children to the Oscars was also a good thing to do as they played such a key role in the film they deserved to be there. They will have seen these events, even living in the slums, on tv and for them to be a part of it must have made them feel very special. Hopefully it will help raise their expectations and encourage them to make the most of their education.
Jeanette, times may be hard but that does not mean we should all put on hair shirts. We need a bit of glitz to brighten things up in these days of gloom and recession.

11:2515996Surely this is a good thing for these kids who otherwise would never have had the opportunity of a good education, not to mention a glamourous Hollywood trip. Well Done Danny Boyle and all the cast, I am looking forward to seeing the film

18:5516014I'm sure they did feel very special for that one night....but how much could the money spent on flights, hotels and suiting and booting them for one night have bought them in their real world?! I know what I'd prefer if I was in their situation - the money!!
Of course Danny Boyle should be setting them up with an education, I don't think it's something that he needs congratulating for though because he has afterall made how many million off the back of these people?!!

19:1116017And if he did not fly them in he would have been critisised for not doing so.... I am sure the children themselves loved the experience, both the film making and the trip to LA, plus their education would be worth far more than the couple of grand cost....they are the ones that really count.
Incidentally, I have nothing to do with the film industry but if my industry is anything to go by I expect the costs of the children's flights, hotel stays etc would have been sponsored, perhaps by the airline and hotel chains themselves.

20:0616025God does everything have to turn into a moral, PC or political issue.
The kids clearly enjoyed themselves and will remember the experience for the rest of their lives. The film company have set up a trust fund for them for the future so they have been given an opportunity to better themselves.

20:1916027getting back to my original question to those that had seen it, did the film glamourise poverty?

21:4316032Jeanette please could you explain how you can glamourise poverty, because I'm lost on that one.
24 February 2009
22:0016033Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There is poverty in the world. This is a Bad Thing. There is a need for fun and laughter and glamour. This is not a Bad Thing. The two can co-exist - as humans we can work hard to alleviate poverty and hardship and also enjoy ourselves. If the money had not been spent on the Oscars it would not have gone to the Third World or to poor kids in the UK. It's a bit like saying we should not enjoy a beer ot two while there are people without fresh water to drink - it's a Bad Thing that peope don't have fresh water and we should work to alleviate that, but that doesn't mean we should not enjoy a beer........

22:5116037thanks for that jeanette.
i remember one of Mr boyles earlier films "trainspotting", possibly my favourite film of all time.
the first half of the film showed the characters having a great time with a life on heroin.
i was thinking at that stage that a wrong message was being sent.
the rest of the film showed the downside, and it was some downside.
