Then Howard, DDC should let them have it back. Not much coalmining was done on the prom.
I like the statue too - it celebrates an era of working men and women, and a way of living that has gone forever - I realise some may say that is a good thing, but I feel the way of life went without having a healthy replacement in place. Where there is a vacuum bacteria grow! We are sometimes too eager to get rid of things wothout realising their value and without knowing how to replace them.........

I thought the plan was for a Merchant Navy memorial to replace it ?
£3800 was received from KCC towards it a while back so I assume it will still happen ??
In fact the fund has a target or £45k and they were at £34k at the end of last year

a merchant navy memorial would be very appropriate, i believe that southampton has the franchise on that industry though.

nice to know that someone else finds it an attractive feature.

I too like the statue, it's just in the wrong place completely.
Let it go to an ex-mining community where it has some relevance.

I agree too, although many miners who lived in Dover and worked down the pits, and NCB Headquarters were on the seafront the place for it is in a mining community,my suggestion would be the new park at Foulmead, although I hope my friends in Aylesham or Snowdown don't see this
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

i think that the decisions is that dover town has lost another asset.
perhaps it could be replaced by the elgin marbles, much less contentious.

Howard is right in that yes we are losing another asset. I can see this statue from my window and it is very popular where it is. Lots of people pass thru the seafront and stop for a linger and the kids get pictured on it, sometimes even climb on it, hug it and so on...so the thinking behind moving it is odd.
The original link to the town, as I understand it, was that much of the coal of Kent was exported through Dover, hence the connection.
But yes its a nice thing very popular and it will be just one more thing less in the Dover visitor/tourist armory.
But as Sue said the decision to remove it has been taken by the looks of it.
We are slowly denuding the seafront of assets .

My purely romantic view of the Miner staring out over the channel seemed apt as it represented an eternity of freedom and openess after a life of claustrophobic dark and dank conditions.
I just loved the thought that those miners who endured a hard and tough life were now enjoying views their never experienced in life.
However whats the connection with the Royce statue of Rolls-Royce fame that overlooks the channel?

It's actually Charles Rolls Marek. He flew to France and obviously didn't like it as he flew straight back again!
It's all nicely summed up here:-

Sorry, but as an ex miner at Tilmanstone Dover has as much right to the statue as say Aylsham aS a large number of miners From Dover worked at all the pits.
So which ever is chosen some one wi;ll lose out
and who decides anyway
k
Who took the decision, when and who are you, Sue, to deem our suggestions irrelevant...!!!?
This is just typical of Dover power Bern. Why do the public not have a say where it goes?
We are simply told. It's going, and not even where to.
Not suprising there seems so much mis-trust from the people.
perhaps yet another case of " the agencies have decided and that's the end of it".
I have to agree with Keith. How long has the statue been in Dover? just out of curiosity. What were the reasons it was placed there to start with?

I think you will find Mandi it is there because the National Coal Board H.Q was at Cambridge Terrace.(East kent division)

Just to show that John and I dont always agree(but remain friends)
I do NOT support his view on the miners statue.
1; Who had the right to decide to move it?
2; Were ex miners consulted?
3; Where is it going, cos I don't know
4; Why should it go to a mining village, do the ex miners from Dover not mean anything?
Think theres a lot of unanswered questions here
well??
