I have received a dodgy spam e-mail, which I have deleted, but it contains e-mails of a lot of people on this forum plus things like Stonehenge Chamber and Plymouth Herald.
It may be obvious if this is your address book so it will be worth ensuring that your PC is fully checked....

I received the same e mail, it was picked up by my antivirus prog. I checked the address listed and thankfully it's not from my address book.

Ian, just a bit of diversity from the water on Mars picture which has obviously led me astray.

Yes thats your very own advert there BarryW and looking good too.....without the paid advertising from guys like yourelf there would be no site. Long since gone thru all my own budget..long since.
Thanks for the tip there Scotchie re the mailing. I havent had one as have just looked but concerned that they have some of our members emails but it might just be co-incidence.

Oh dear...I wonder if those listings are from the old site which was defunct in the end, but I guess some expert surfers might be able to trawl some of it up. The reason I say old site is because some of the ones listed there arent members on here these days..like TVamp, Blackfish and so on.
hmmmmmm

As I remember Doverforum admin was one of the names also Colette & Barry and the ones Scotchie has already mentioned. It sounds like something from the old site as Doverforum admin was used not your current e mail.

Just dug it out again, it contains a lot of Plymouth Herald, Mail News Media, The Sentinel, Archant and Newsquest addresses.

I also received the same email and deleted it, as PaulB said it sounds as though it has been hacked from the old site

Hopefully our email addresses on this version of the site are safe. I haven't seen this current spam mail but then my system does tend to catch most of them and they get deleted very rapidly.
I trust that all members' PC's are protected by a firewall and anti-virus measures of some description; there's been enough discussion on here about this sort of thing over the years that there is really no excuse to be "exposed" on the net these days.
The boss's explanation of the source of the addresses seems valid to me though. There is a web archive of obsolete sites out there somewhere but I can't locate it at the moment.

Phil, we will probably all have protection from known threats installed on our PC. The real danger comes from new threats that become reality before the IT Security Software industry can provide a fix.
I had to deal with one such attack in Lagos not too long ago. On the fifth day of server and disk cleaning as per Microsoft and McAfee recommended, both organisations advised us there 6 mutations that now had to be dealt with too. That took us quite a time to deal with, and was nearly as difficult as explaiong to my Executive Board how this all came about.
It was only when I named other huge Nigerian organisations battling the problem and the declared (some are too embarrased to confess publicly) 9 million infected PC's globally did they stop blaing me personally for the attack happening. I don't think to this day they really understand how virus protection works.

Quite right Sid, and corporate systems are especially vulnerable and likely to be specifically targeted for hacking. The major threats, as I understand it, come from email and web browsing, which require human interaction. While there are many software and hardware solutions to protect the machinery it's very difficult to prevent the human element from doing something stupid which practically invites the hackers in. It only takes one email to be opened in error and a system can be infected from within. I know from my own experience how difficult it can be to clear a single PC of an infection, let alone a corporate system.

Quite right Phil, plus the very real and constant danger of folks bringing their memory sticks to work and plugging them into their company laptop or PC.
Problems like these really do highlight the absolute ignorance of senior management about things IT related, yet they still think they know better than us professionals.
I sometimes think the pressure to train employees is the wrong pressure. Management, particularly in the UK, is so poor at many things the investment should be made there first. Often I see good employees being lead by imbeciles who think they know everything, but rarely do.
Until we change that dynamic we will fail to be as successful as we ought.
