Well no, Howard, I rounded everything up in my post 91.
Britain was on the verge of a collapse, aggressive atheism had attempted to have local Government either renege the Christian Faith or be dragged out of the governing Chamber to prison.
We can only imagine what emergency meetings went on between Police chiefs, the Government, the Clergy and other administrative authorities, including high court judges and top lawyers...and the response came swift from Parliament.
The fact is, Howard, a high court ruling is law unless it is overruled. The Police would have had to be asked to intervene to evict councillors from the chamber for disobeying a high court ruling, as many said they would disobey it.
This was no joke situation! It was extremely serious.
Taking the issue further, if the high court ruling was disobeyed by local Government and the Police, that in itself would have become a precedent for disobedience towards other high court rulings, and we could have had a situation of collapse in society. Unprecedented in our history!
But then, to attempt to abolish the Christian Faith in England was an unprecedented move.
Our Christian Saint George Cross forbade it!
Which is why I wrote on the previous thread at the time, when the issue came up on the Forum, that the Government must overrule the court ruling.
And this Gov. did!

Whilst I am now bored with this, I do have one question - what exactly has a High Court (therefore a Civil Law) ruling got to do with the Police, whose job is to enforce Criminal Law?

The answer is obvious, Ross. You're forcing the topic beyond its boundaries with a red herring.
Or have realised the situation the State was in with the High Court ruling and are now trying to cover up the potential catastrophic results that could have ensued.
An poppy-burning group of extremists was banned last year by order of the Home Secretary, and became a criminal group by definition. The group had not been considered criminal prior to the decision of the home Secretary.
Are you suggesting that there are no sanctions for disobeying a civil law as imposed by a High Court through erroneous interpretation of existing Law made in Parliament?
It can result in prosecution, and the Police being called in to execute a court ruling.
Such as with a home eviction decided in court for failure to pay the mortgage. The Police can be called in to evict the family, even though it was not a criminal case but a civil one!
In this case it would have been persecution, and we can be sure that no court in Britain will ever again compare saying prayers in a council chamber to something illegal.
This is now the Law, Ross.
If we want to say our prayers in the chamber, no-one is going to stop us!

Or to quote Dave Allen, "Goodnight and may your god go with you.".
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Jan, the chambers referred to are the places of local Government.
You cannot tell the Government where they can pray and where they can't!
The national secular society tried it and got their ears clipped

those dave allen days were great,
and like others the subject is now a little stale.
at the end of the day if cllrs choose by majority vote to have/not to have prayers
thats there choice.
if they vote by majority to have prayers and some don';t wish to attend the prayers, then that to should be allowed.
the problem comes as howard says when you have a mountain of different religions, where would they hold all these meetings?
very time consuming.
