- 4 April 2010 08:0345929Can't see it too well - I first thought a Riley 9 up to 1939 had various bodies but also due to the lack of car building during the war many old pre war cars lasted well into the 1950s I once had a wolseley 8 built in 1947 with an overhaed valve engine but a body designed in the 30s

- 4 April 2010 08:1245933In the 20s my mum used to play the piano for the films - she worked in Goulden and winds around the corner during the day and had to play sheet music when a customer wanted to know how it sounded!

- 4 April 2010 14:5845970Have put a copy of the photo of the Granada cinema on my fotopic site where it can be viewed at much larger resolution. Open the photo, scroll down below it and click the "full size" box, then left click within the photo and it comes up at original resolution. If you right click instead of left click then you can click "Save picture as" and download it to your computer at original resolution.
The enlarged photo discloses that the other picture showing was "Brief Encounter" so this would make it 1945.

There are loads of other old photos of Dover in the two collections entitled "Old postcards, prints and paintings of Dover Harbour," and also in many of the other collections on the site. The great majority are either modern photos I have taken myself or scans of material I have purchased. Anybody is welcome and encouraged to download these for their own use, my sole purpose in putting them on is to disseminate them as widely as possible. A small minority are stuff I have downloaded from elsewhere and believe to be non contentious from the copyright point of view, just too good to miss and not available in any other way. Firstly the Art Deco Cinema designed by Theodore Komisarjevsky. The example of a similar cinema (now being used as a Bingo Hall) is in Tooting, it has Grade 1 listing and the interior is magnificent.
Dover has allowed this gem to rot. I believe the fantasic interior has declined over years of neglect and I doubt if even Weatherspoons would attempt to restore.
Secondly. The fantasic pre war Riley (Picture is possibly a re-bodied car). Anyway Riley competed at Le Mans pre war (also 1949 and 1950). 1934 was their most successful year when they had six cars that raced and all six finished the grueling 24 hour race.
