couldn't find the original thread in this one.
the latest news is that negotiations will take place to try get matches shown in market square.
does anyone have any inside information on this?

Yes , very straightforward.
The matches can be screened if the appropriate safety measures are agreed and funded.
There's the rub!!
Very much a live issue and talks continue with ALL responsible agencies .
There is a will to see the matches screened if the intractables and risk analysts can be mollified.
We'll have to await next set of meetings.

Those who sit around the table and apply red tape to get themselves off the hook or screw the taxpayer.
Does that help.
Probably screwed myself by this posting Howard

excellent post paul.
i suspect that a reason will be found to stop the showing of matches.
Too much noise and ordinary people enjoying themsleves Howard, Can't have that can we? We all know the 'wrong types' will be attracted to watch it.

sadly you may be right sid, how anyone can expect trouble when it will be only one teams supporters will be there amazes me.
besides, why do we have a police force?
the pubs in dover have problems with anti social behaviour most nights of the year, we don't close the pubs.

have been told the cost will be £32k, not sure if a rumour or factual.
Presume this is for H&S and policing.
If it goes ahead and this is the actual cost then it will fall on the Dover Ratepayers to cough up.
Far better £32k is spent on keeping the toilets open that benefit tourism.
Perhaps it is these "ongoing" costs that was the reason Canterbury and other towns rejected the "generous offer" of the big screen.

Will Market Square be ready for the World Cup? All the paving is covered in multi tones of gaudy paint where the diggers are due next.......

If there is building works going on it will give the more boisterous fans a ready made supply of missiles to hurl at the screen if England fail to perform

Struggling to understand the cost of £32k to be honest.
Driving content to the big screen should be free, now the thing is installed and up and running.
H&S cost? Struggling to know what that might be, but, it makes one wonder what New Years Day H&S costs for Trafalgar Square are if this relates to a few fans on occasional days/nights.
Policing? No extra requirement because, as has already been mentioned, at night the pubs/clubs chuck out and the police will be around anyway, if we're lucky. And besides, just how much trouble is France v Uruguay likley to cause?
No, this sounds to me like a typical smokescreen to avoid letting the big screen show the World Cup matches.

To be honest, I'd rather watch the footie from the comfort of an armchair anyway. That is, if I'm going to watch France v Uruguay.

£32k. Get a grip!!! A few coppers who would be there anyway (if the job was being done properly) a bit if a barrir (maybe - I am not sure what the barrier would be there to protect......) and perhaps a St Johns ambulance crew on tap. FFS!!!!!!

andy
the first england match is on saturday week, if the weather is fine, could be more fun watching with like minded people in a good atmosphere than watching at home.

A decision will probably be made after the World Cup is over

In 2008 Manchester set up big screens to show Manchester United v Germany, not expecting any trouble because it was the home team and only those fans attending. When they lost the ensuing 'problems' not only caused an expensive load of property damage they were so serious they even disrupted trains in and out of Manchester.
Costs for showing the matches include boarding the fountain, fencing and (you will love this) the provision of toilets as well as policing.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Well, let's just not bother then, just in case.

Sadly, I shall not be able to watch England's first game, either in Market Square or at home. We're in France that weekend - we'll have to see if our hotel will have it on!
