No Brian it wasn't alright for the IRA to shoot, kill or mame, however they were and are terrorists not signed up to the Geneva conventions, unlike the british army who are. We also have very clear rules of engagement and nowhere does it allow you to open fire on an unarmed 15 yr old boy at point blank range with a general purpose machine gun!

Of course troops could fire back but only if they complied with the terms of engagement per the yellow card

I was in the army in the 1950 and 1960s and you done what you was told to do or you ended up in the nick.right or wrong you had to do what your orders were.
