Ofgem`s patience has run out. It`s consultation on simpler prices ends onWednesday. If the Big Six agree to
the introduction of a uniform standing charge ( fixed by Ofgem ) and a two tariff approach, allowing
consumers to compare which company is cheapest, they will escape a Competion Commission probe..........
........if they don`t Ofgem is willing to cap prices.
Ofgem had a strong philosophical bias in favour of an unfettered free market. It lost faith in this approach
when in the 2008 probe/investigations they caught the Big Six siphoning off £ 500 million a year in excess
profits............if only contagion could catch on..........
Finally the `Big Six `is having its collar felt........
Millions of households who struggle to heat their homes will welcome its tougher stance.

If the bonuses were awarded 3 years ago to the top bankers when RBS and some other banks was heading towards bankruptcy, then they should be confiscated.

Utter rubbish.
Hester was employed by the last government 3 years ago to get RBS back to health and the bonuses were agreed by them as part of his remuneration package. Get your facts right, Hester is doing a good job.

But Keith, it does matter who made the contract - you can hardly moan about the current government on Bankers bonuses when the contracts were written and agreed with, by the Labour Government - as was.
The Labour Government thought it was right that he should be rewarded in such a way.

roger;
you will find(if you bothered to read my posts)
I don't give a ship who gave out the contract, whether it was labour/tory or the monster raving loony party
my argument has been consistent

Whether or not he is entitled to the bonus is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of contract. The moral argument is around the drafting of the contract not the carrying out of it. And as none of us has seen the contract we can hardly comment on its terms.

In March new proposals will be presented in Parliament on share-holding companies' salaries and bonuses, so once a new law comes into effect old contracts will come to an end.
Hopefully the legislation will be strict, severe and heavily regulated to stop fat-catism once and for all, starting from the roots.

yes i saw that alex, i think you will find that it will be brushed away quietly and never reach the statute book.
basically any new legislation will probably prove to be unworkable and unenforceable.

#433 Reg I agree. That means that when times get hard I don't have to pay my staff what they are due. Or my suppliers. Or HMRC. Where will that lead?

Peter, it will lead to you having to close down your business.

So RBS should close, Alex?

For what reason Brian ? Because its Chief Executive gets paid a lot on money ? This is reason to close down and put thousands of people out of work - and worse ?
I don't think so.
