Viktor Orbán, speaking during the annual commemoration of the Hungarian uprising:
'
Today, things pop up that remind us of the Soviet times. Yes, it happens that history repeats itself... Fortunately, what once was tragedy is now a comedy at best. Fortunately, Brussels is not Moscow. Moscow was a tragedy. Brussels is just a bad contemporary parody'.
Note for readers: If you know someone who has been affected by the UK's exit from the EU, you can help the clown by guiding him away from wanting to rejoin the circus.

'
Olena Zelenska’s Organization Accused of Child Trafficking Scandal'
How it started:
'
Last fall, amidst the grandeur of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, Olena Zelenska, accompanied by the likes of Hillary Clinton, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, and Hollywood’s own Matt Damon, heralded the launch of her eponymous charity foundation'.
How it's going:
'
Accusations have emerged that the organization, under the guise of rescuing war-impacted children, has been covertly involved in child trafficking, with some victims purportedly ending up in the hands of pedophiles across Europe'.

Obviously, such a demonstration of European values needs to be rewarded...

Max Winthrop, chair of the Law Society's Employment Law Committee, said "We haven't gained what was sometimes referred to as the Singapore-on-the-Thames approach. In other words, to deregulate the marketplace. So you then have to ask yourself the question, is the loss of seamless trade throughout the European Economic Area really worth the cattle?"
...anyone able to give a steer on the meaning?
(Not my real name.)

The actual Winthrop nugget was 'what exactly is it that we've gained from leaving the EU?' His answer, of course, is the standard liberal remainer windbaggery 'we should never have left'.
My answer is that we've hardly gained a thing because, despite the referendum's clear democratic mandate for leaving, the negotiators and the classes they represent (political, economic, 'security', media) never wanted it.
To pick up B's metaphor, Winthrop would rather we had stayed on the ranch awaiting our future as meat than jump the fence.

There was never anything to gain - because we could never go there. What "Singapore on Thames" would have looked like is cheap migrant labour and de-regulation. The second part might have been doable, but the cheap foreign labour bit was always impossible. The P&O model played out across all sectors. As I always say, would have pitted Tory free marketers against Tory protectionists in the shires.
The real reason, was, of course, to hoover up UKIP voters. The rest is history....

Oh, there will be gains alright. They'll just come about differently. History awaits the EU, which will pretty much be gone in 5-10 years, unless it accepts certain emerging realities.

I used to work with some slow folk who were confidently predicting the same wishful guff in 2016. First Brexit, then Grexit rapidly followed by Frexit. It was balls then, it's still balls now.

Intriguing use of quotation marks. Who said it?

So you made it up. And then thought, ooh, I'll put it in italics and pretend it's a quotation.
Yep. That says a lot about you.
