Only 2 local authorities up for re-election in Kent today - I remember one was around Sevenoaks, can't remember what the other one was, but it isn't us.

i was hoping nobody would reply for an hour or so and get people hunting around for their polling cards or gulping their dinner down and hotfooting it to the polling station.

Sky reports the following for starters:
"After results from seven councils Labour had gained 31 seats, the Tories had lost 15 and the Lib Dems had lost 10."
This seems like a trend, will probably be confirmed tomorrow as the counting goes on.
Turnout will also be an important factor. Probably lower than ever, albeit above 25%!

From the Scotsman:
"Scottish council elections: Apathy in the UK as 'two thirds' snub poll.!
"TURNOUT in the local elections could be as low as 30 per cent in many areas despite mammoth efforts by party activists and good weather across much of the country, party organisers have warned, with voters remaining uninterested by the choice on offer."
So don't blame it on the weather, and let's admit, politics is dead!

No sooner had one messenger left, then another came in with even worse tidings:
The Telegraph:
"Early poll results suggested large swings to Labour in wards across England."
Seems a whole world is collapsing tonight. Could Col. Dave be hiding underneath his pillow tonight?

The Financial Times:
"Amid signs of a low turnout, senior Conservatives warned that the party could lose up to 450 seats to Labour. Andrew Mitchell, Tory development secretary, said both coalition parties were likely to lose out: "It's clear it's going to be an extremely difficult night for the government," he said."
In fact the LibDems seem to have been utterly thrashed!
I think the Government is on its way out. This looks like a sheer bombardment of rotten tomatoes. With so little public support, it's hard to imagine Dave wagging his finger across Parliament again. He'll be laughed out!

usual mid term stuff, thought the yellows would have done a bit better though due to their good reputation for running councils.

Can anyone tell me why all local elections are not held on the same day as the General Election is?

Very simple Carole up until recently General Election dates were always at the discretion of the PM.
Councils period in office are four years, national government can be up to five years.

Yes, no real surprises here. The usual mid-term reaction with, of course, the Conservatives defending a very high tide mark from those dark days of Labour.

Obviously mid-term `blues`...but if Boris wins London it will definitely be against the run of play.
The Media/observers are saying Boris is the only popular Tory in the Country...right or wrong ...its a double edge sword for
Cameron.
He will obviously use it to the n`th degree for PR purposes ...but Boris is preparing his next step up........

Sorry Paul. My question was badly worded. Must take more care.
I should have said why are not all local Government elections held on the same day countrywide. Eg we all vote on the same day in the General Election so why is it different for local elections?

To avoid mayhem and disaster Carole, a bit like why all the cylinders in a car's engine do not fire all at the same time. There is further 'smoothing' through the fact that local councillors are voted for a percentage at a time.
When all is said and done, this is part and parcel of a system geared-up to suit the Political Partys. Although staggering elections does help to keep the fortunes of the Partys in the news and on the mind of the electorate. [I am rapidly running out of guff and puff]
Over the years it is often said that the Conservatives are very good at getting their people out and voting...so further cause for concern there then.
