Seriously?! Just goes to show that there's no such thing as bad publicity - and why I rarely vote Conservative!

Anyone know the odds on Chuka Umunna becoming Tory leader? He seems to have all the necessary politics.

Surprise new entry at number 666, Simon Hart. The MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire has all the necessary qualifications: looks old before his time, is a Remainer, has a poor grasp of the facts, is prone to making false assumptions, writes for the Fail on Funday, doesn't apologise when he's wrong, keeps it in the family by employing his wife as his office manager, and has a downer on foxes. A perfect fit.

Nice to see my tip Rory Stewart creeping up on the inside rail.
James Cleverly still at long odds but well worth a punt.

The knives are out for Boris.

Gotta say the voxbox video comments from Mrs May are particularly well-measured.

It will be interesting to see if team Boris try and keep this in the news. I see Nadine Dorries is squawking and screeching as usual - which suggests they will.

Boris certainly has a way with words to ensure he gets the maximum publicity, a shame that this time the publicity is all about him rather than the wearing of burkas. His letterbox comment was certainly offensive to the wearers and rather childish.
His remark was typical Boris who is the UK's rather embarrassing version of President Trump, they both open their mouth when it would be better left shut.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

The irony being that he doesn't want the wearing of it banned which won't go down well with his supporters and most of the public.

In the original article he was opposing the ban on the burka in Denmark. His comments on 'letter boxes' was an aside. Personally I think Hasidic Jews wandering around North London in overcoats in this weather is bloody stupid and looks daft. Am I anti-Semitic? I think not.

Schmegegge. It's a rekel, not as heavy as an 'overcoat'.

It was a deliberately crafted intervention designed only to remind everyone that Boris is still alive and well - and still wants to be leader of the Tory party. Absolutely everything else in the article was an aside!

Thanks. I have learnt something today.
So what's with the bin liners on their hats when it rains?

Ruth Davidson making a rather silly comment in comparing a crucifix and a face veil.

Courtesy of the Times.
A prominent imam has defended Boris Johnson in a row over the burka as Ruth Davidson joined senior Tories in criticising the former foreign secretary. Mr Johnson faces mounting pressure to say sorry, including from the prime minister, after comparing women in face-covering veils to bank robbers and letterboxes.
However, Taj Hargey, the imam at Oxford Islamic Congregation, said Mr Johnson should “not apologise for telling the truth” and, in fact, did not go far enough. In a letter to The Times, Dr Hargey said there was “no Koranic legitimacy” for the burka, adding that it was “a nefarious component of a trendy gateway theology for religious extremism and militant Islam”. Dr Hargey, a frequent critic of the burka, is best known for allowing men and women to pray together and for discouraging Muslim-only schools.
Ms Davidson, the Scottish Conservative leader, called for Mr Johnson to say sorry, in spite of her agreeing with the wider argument in his article for The Daily Telegraph that face-covering veils should not be banned. Speaking in East Lothian, she said: “I think that this wasn’t an off-the-cuff slip... he knew exactly what he was doing and I think it crossed from being provocative and starting a debate and actually it became rude and gratuitous.”

The PM must be glad that Parliament is in recess as MPs are spread all over and cannot form a huddle and plot her overthrow. Asking Boris to apologise has not put her in a good light with party activists, most of whom object to the face veil and want a wider debate on the issue. Meanwhile Boris Is happy to play the martyr and say nothing.
