#23 Typical Tory response! The title of this thread is 'The Conservative Manifesto' - there is another thread entitled 'Jezza'. Whenever the Tories are questioned on their policies they cry "But that Mr Corbyn is a beardy weirdy" (I paraphrase)!
Mr Corbyn is like the wasp cake at a summer picnic. The Tory wasps buzz around him leaving the rest of the shadow cabinet to have beer and sandwiches - but will it be in number 10. (Regrettably, there are far too many hornets on Labour's backbenches.)

Back on topic, I'm disappointed with the Tory plans for the 'death tax' with an asset ceiling of £100,000.
Sir Andrew Dilnot, in his report of 2011, suggested putting a cap of £35,000 on all social care costs, any above being picked up by the state, and the Tories accepted the idea though putting the ceiling up to a higher £75,000.
Sir Andrew hoped that this would encourage a private market for social care insurance.
In an ideal world I'd like a death tax of 100% which would encourage oldies to downsize (freeing up large houses which many of us are rattling around in) and use their money to enjoy themselves while they are still alive or give money away to their kids when they might need it.

I wonder how many will be signing their home over to their family after the election.
I will be looking into the details about doing that as it is also my daughter's home so in theory she could become homeless.

I wonder if by doing that you would incur liability to capital gains tax Jan, as you would perhaps be deemed as giving away an asset?? Not really sure but just a thought, I daresay some of our brighter sparks on here would know the answer!

John, I was thinking more of something like joint ownership. At the back of my mind I have a feeling you have to live for another seven? years to avoid problems with tax.
Thinking of the the problem of an ageing population, I am surprised the insurance companies are not promoting some kind of insurance plan to cover our possible need for care, they advertise plenty for various funeral plans.

Apparently they have and a whistle blower in the industry warned people off, I must try and find the article. Meanwhile solicitors will be rubbing their hands in anticipation of business to come.

Yes Jan, that seven year period does ring a bell. The whole thing is a bit of a minefield really.
On the question of insurance cover for care in later life, I daresay that even if that was obtainable it would cost you an arm and a leg to purchase such a plan.
We're all better off dead I think!

The media call it a U turn but it's not really as the PM has refused to put a figure on the cap. This is all about blind panic at the reaction to the plan and trying to save face.

whoever wins the election.

Good lord, Capt Haddock, you seem to be suggesting that
everyone will incur a tax rise. Will this include those on the Jimmy Carr tax avoidance programmes and also those non-doms that earn here and bank abroad in Anguilla/Bahamas etc? After all, we're all in it together (I might argue that some are more in it than others).

Update on the social care issue courtesy of Newsthump.
The Conservative Party has today made a manifesto pledge to guarantee workers one day off work
each year in order to drag a sick or elderly relative to a mountain-top to be eaten alive by vultures.
Simon Williams, a spokesman for the party said, “More and more workers are having to care for ageing parents, and employers are putting pressure on them not to take time off work.
“But with this manifesto promise, Britain’s workers will not have to risk the losing their jobs for disposing of a relative they could no longer afford to feed, keep warm or buy medication for.
“This pledge guarantees them time off work to provide end-of-life care for a relative by enshrining in law their right to a full 24 hours to drag their loved one’s still living body up a mountainside to be consumed by scavengers.
“This pledge also demonstrates our commitment to protecting endangered species, i.e. vultures.”
The spokesman added, “This day off will of course be unpaid. We can’t expect employers or the state to shoulder that burden.”
