Thanks for broadening the picture BarryW. I would love to know the ones that are a lot worse than Nothern Rock..will steer clear.
But just to clear up the loss figure I guessed at earlier. I was way short of the mark. The figure is actually £724,000,000. Its just that there are so many zeros in these losses generally that the man in the street ceases to grasp the meaning of it all. There is little prospect of improvement for NR in the near future either which seems to beg the question, how will the government (ie you and me) get a return on the investment we made initially to keep them alive. Should they have been left to go to the wall?

Howard,
Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes.
I have been with Barclays in the Market Square
for 32 years. Never had any problems but then again I have never asked them for anything, never met the manager. I just use it as a current account just to pay the bills and have never been in the red.
Alec.

no one has asked for them for a loan or overdraft then?
that is the acid test.

The acid-test of what Howard ? what the interest rate will be, whether they'll lend to you ?
With the Bank Rate being half of one percent and loan/mortgages rates being so different, they'd soon make a profit - if they lend to people who will/can pay it back.

Judging by the resurgence in banking profits this week ( Northern Rock being the exception) this would, I suggest, be a good time to invest in bank shares. I can see the green shoots of recovery underfoot and if anyone knows how to make money then these guys do. They also, as we are all too well aware, know how to lose money too....so note the volatility. But at this time and in the cyclical scheme of these things generally, I would venture that a few bob could be made by a canny investment in said banks right now.
Clearly though its a volatile market so the investment would not be for widows and orphans.
I used to play the stock market a bit way back in the heady 80's and early 90's and while you can make money you can also lose it just as quick. So dont take what Im saying as any kind of financial advice...but a gamblers whim perhaps!

Glad you put the last bit in PaulB - you were close to breaking the law !!!!
For information, the right people to advise on individual shares are stockbrokers not IFAs who deal with mutual/collective investment schemes.

HOWARD
I'm with HSBC
Bear in mind these losses, then look to cuts the tories want to make in public spending, does it add up? is it right?
We can pay chief executives, leading members of banks 100's of thousands of pounds a year even if they lose millions.
On the other hand we say sod you lot on close to poverty pay your unlikely to have a job t/moz surely summat wrong?
Will cutting public spending solve the problem, sticking more and more people on the dole by doing so, which means even more people claiming s/.security
More thought we finks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Keith - what about Labours proposed public spending cuts then? have you not noted the subtle changes made by Labour spokesmen since brown was caught out?
There will be cuts whatever the result of the election, the present level of public spending cannot be maintained. There is no choice. The bigger the cuts the better for the economy and long term job prospects.
