Today i went up to the new pub in Whitfield [the kittiwake], it was a weekend of training for the staff before the opening tomorrow. The carvery was one of the best Ive had in a long time good quality meat and a range of crispy veg. As to the drinks Humphy enjoyed the wine she chose, my ale was served in very good condition and reasonably priced. In fact i can recommend it to anyone for a good meal.

It looks a very attractive place guzzler, and we shall be paying it a visit soon. With all those dwelling`s around, I don`t see why it shouldn`t prosper. Incidently, is there parking round the back?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

I was thinking of all those locals round about Howard, as to whether they`d be room for outsider`s to park as these places can get pretty busy. I`d probably jump on the bus mate.

There's a car park around the back, its a lot bigger inside than you think.

Thanks Tom
Glad to hear it was a good experience and the standards are kept as high in the future.
I bet the Duke of York and the Marine Court (both Whitbtread's) suffer - at least for a while.

Probably Roger, but I have to say that the service we've encountered at The Duke of York's is simply the worst I've endured in a long, long time. It will be a cold day in hell before I part with money there ever again; the temperature in hell that day will therefore match their food.

I have to agree about the Duke of York, but the Marine Court is quite good - food and service.

They have good and bad days Roger, but don't we all! I tend to escape there if I have a couple of hours spare. Yesterdays meal was great but the previous time I visited it was dreadful in every possible way.
Duke of Yorks is pants!
I know a million ways to always pick the wrong thing to say
Marine Court has a good atmosphere, and some very friendly waiters, BUT the service is slow. We had to wait nearly 3/4 hour for our first course yesterday and it was not that busy.
The guy who was one of the main waiters at Marine Court left and has ened up in the Mayfly at Hawkinge. Needless to say the service there is very good, and the food, much more often than not, is excellent value.
I stopped using Marine Court when he left as it went rapidly downhill, the DOY's is just a disgrace and I suspect, the Kittiwake won't be long in droppping its standards too. That type of eatery has high staff turnover and eventually the local manager just gives up in a constant stream of recruiitment interviews.
I am bound to confess, the French do this type of eatery so much better than us. They are hopeless when it comes to war, but can teach us a thing or two about mass catering.

Was that Wayne Sid or the (very) short guy who was the Manager ?

I have always found marine court cheap and good, although yes the time it takes is something they need to work on.
Iv also been to mayfly at Hawkinge and have to say no complaints, we had a big party of people and all were dealt with well.

I think the Marine Court or Millers as I still call it did go down downhill for a while but a new group took over, spent a considerable fortune revamping everything and it has improved quite a lot in recent times. Its got quite a pleasant atmosphere and always has a good crowd. Nothing worse than going somewhere for the evening and the place you go to is empty. Thats a joy killer.
Paul was the manager guy, the short chappie, and he did eventually resurface at The Mayfly although not sure if he is still there. Wayne is still in Millers, he did leave as I understand it but has since come back. A good humoured guy for sure. Not sure if its all that cheap now though Keef.
But generally one of Dover's plus stories I would say.
Yes Roger, it was Wayne. Thanks for reminding me. He is a top bloke and has excellent customer service skills.
Myself and Mark are fans of the beefeater and the duke of yorks when we go out but will be trying the new one asap.

The Beefeater is quite good too - food and service and it's just up the road from us.
It's almost a pity that the good independant restaurants tend to be a little too expensive to dine at more often; I'd love to be able to afford to dine at La Scala and the Allotment more often - no job = no money; no money = no dine out (very often). But then I didn't get paid when I had a job, not the last one anyway.

I quite like that Beefeater restaurant, too, Roger. Have you checked out the Beefeater website? If not, it's definitely worth doing so; if you sign up for the emails and promo deals, you'll almost always get 2 for 1 deals, or free desserts etc. Their Head Office is top notch at promoting their restaurants.
