18:4939545Maybe I'm missing something obvious, or political, here but until an hour or so ago there was a Face Book group that called itself Dover Forum with a couple of hundred members, including many from here. It made for an interesting diversion and now it seems to have been deleted!
Any clues anyone?

18:5539546FWIW I did get an e-mail recently from one Aspey suggesting that I joined.
I don't do Facebook.
Not for grown ups IMHO>

18:5939547I was on it too, Phil. It has been removed it seems. Aspy was sending out a lot of messages and perhaps the adminstrators thought it spam.

19:2539549Dont underestimate Facebook Bob.
It is increasingly used in business both in business promotion and in my case last week to make contact with a client.
It enables me to keep easily in contact with friends/clients in the USA, Middle East and Africa.
It is also used in politics, I am able to keep in touch with the activities of 4 friends/aquaintances who are Conservative Parliamentary candidates. It is also being used as a campaigning tool as well.
On the social front I have re-established contact with one ex-school friend I had not seen since age 15 and someone I worked with 30 years ago as well.
Its by no means just a childs toy though they do use it in their own way!

20:2039556the forum in question upset a lot of dovorians who felt maligned on there, they complained, the plug was pulled.
barry is right about the business and politics side, but the majority of stuff is utter rubbish, sometimes obscene, very often abusive.
phil, who started this thread, will confirm this.

20:5539559I am a Babyfacebooker on the business side! I am just learning about the art of twitter and Facebook and self promotion! It is fun!

15:5939628Howard: What you say about FaceBook may well be true to an extent but it does depend on who your "friends" are on there. I have yet to come across anything obscene or abusive but then the majority of my friends list are actually that and not some random nobody from Nowheresville.
As for the deleted group; Aspy did post a lot of information on there and some of it was interesting/useful and probably duplicated on DF as well but it was serving a purpose in my opinion, though he could have called the group something other than Dover Forum! There were no complaints posted into the group that I am aware of and the group was gaining quite a following.
There is obviously a history with Aspy that I'm unaware of with regards to DF and he has certainly got a bee in his bonnet about it. As a result he has resorted to a direct attack on FaceBook of this forum and blames The Boss in particular (rightly or wrongly) for the group being pulled. He is aware of this topic as some recent posts of his on FB quote directly from here. Or is that the problem?

17:0939632Facebook not for grown-ups? Balderdash! That's an anachronistic, knee-jerk notion. I'm with BarryW on this one. It's the most powerful social media tool around for older people, and no mistake. FB and Twitter have fast replaced conventional websites in their reach and efficacy, and very much so in a business sense too.
I've often said Dover Forum should push itself on Facebook. That's unless it's happy being a cosy, semi-closed shop, and not a lobbying tool for persuading the complacent, the time-serving and the feckless to remove said fingers from said jacksies.
Cheers all,
Andy

18:1139638i would not bother vic, my view on facebook is that it can be a useful tool, but is top heavy with cranks.
i get friendship requests from people i have never heard of, even from people under a pseudonym with no photo or profile.
the abuse appears to be unchecked, children go on there.

i sincerely hope that paul b never makes the link up.

18:2039640You are supposed to confirm that you know someone before you accept them as a friend. Abuse can be reported and action is taken as has been seen over this issue. The quality of postings is only as good as the membership and standard of moderation. FB has a long list of rules, as do most forums, but keeping track of millions of members must be a daunting task. Much of it must, therefore, rely on members reporting postings that break the rules. This appears to have happened in this case.
The resurfaced group doesn't appear to have an owner - and Aspy denies he has anything to do with it. It would seem that someone is out to stir the pot a bit, which could be amusing!

18:4239642that is why i do not accept unknown people as friends, but i like to follow the exploits of people like gwyn and charlie.
every so often i spot an abusive post on charlies site, to his credit he quickly removes it.
i typed in "gwyn prosser" and got a load of "i hate GP", that sort of thing, i glanced through and the language was from the sewers, and i can swear with the best sometimes.
i made a comment about one in particular and recieved 3 private messages containing mispelt obscenities.
like blue barry i have managed to track down rfriends from the past so it has a good side.
however, anything not policed sensibly just leads to anarchy from people who will insult through a computer screen and then clam up when confronted in real life by the individual.

18:5139643The only thing this aspy guy has against us is that we decided not to allow him access to doverforum because its clear he just wanted to use it as a platform to attack other people. Thats not what we do.

19:2339650If Aspy has a problem it seems to me to be over-enthusiasm. That tends to get in the way of what he is trying to achieve, which are often things with real value. However, when the responses aren't forthcoming, or there is a suspicion of obfuscation, Aspy gets his hackles up, just a bit more than the rest of us.
The unnanounced closing of public toilets in the town was cause Aspy took up with vigour, maybe a bit too much for most, but what is say his "work" here and on FB wasn't a contributing factor the reversal of the decision?
But, I agree 100% with PB, DF is no place for personal attacks, although that rule does seem to get some latitude when it comes to Barry being on the receiving end of snide remarks.
It would be great if Aspy could contain his vigour a bit as I genuinely think he would make a very useful contribution to discussions on here, but there is also a need for him to observe the rules too.

19:3739655Facebook alarmed me too, at first - there was a considerable amount of offensive language and abuse (not directed at me!), but I have learned how to navigate better now, and use the delete button wisely! It is a useful tool, along with linkedin and twitter and the others, but it needs a high level of self-policing. Aspy seems like a good guy with lots to give - if he learns the groundrules of the forum he would probably be an asset.

01:0439682Aspy. Now there's a name I remember from the old DoverWeb days. Nice to see he's still around. Hmmm...

14:1939695I think his heart is in the right place but, as mentioned above, his manner of presentation doesn't do him any favours. Thanks for providing the "history lesson" Boss. All has now become clear.
