Nice picture Kath of Britannia class No 70004 William Shakespeare, one of two of the class allocated to Stewarts Lane Depot in south east London for the Dover boat trains, the other being 70014 Iron Duke. Both were withdrawn and scrapped in 1967 from Carlisle Kingmoor shed.

I have a true story to tell you all later when I have got time,it is about the time I came face to face with the Golden Arrow at the western docks but I was in a lorry at the time taking bread to the ferrys.

Good one Howard it was made of flour and yeast,I worked for Gillberts in the late 1960s first job after my army days and nearly my last one with my meeting up with the Golden Arrow.
. It was on a cold a winter morning very dark and alot of flog about ,well I was crossing over the raiway track to get to the boats well i came off the road where it goes over the track and my lorry wheels got went down into the stone which was each side of the track and I could not get off, wheels just keep going round and round but not moving the lorry, just then the Gold Arrow came towards me along the track, luck would have it they stoped it before it hit me ,I was still inside at the time.they had to get a big crane to lift me off and all this took about two hours or more ,they would not lift till it was day light must say not one of my better days, when I phone the office to tell them why I was running late they were not very happy about it all.

My life has been full of happings and in the most great fun to look back on but at the time I did not think so.
Where is the Dover fairground Vic? I've not heard of it in the 24 years I've been here.

The fairground was in Pencester Gardens Sid, as it is today. All the transporting lorries had Forrests on the side of them if I remember correctly, (2 r`s). Stayed for two weeks, bumping cars, big wheel, octupus, numerous side shows etc. An annual event we all looked forward to back in the 60s.

Colin Mr Perkins knows that it is just his way of trying to be funny about it.
Vic, not the case old fruit. I'd not heard the phrase "Dover Fairground" and wondered if it was a different location to Pencester. I am not always cynical you know?

Vic, as you are slagging off friends of mine, please justify your comments....
Do you have a planning application number (it is all in the public domain) so I can see if it is planning law, the planning department or councillors that are causing the issue? You keep saying get rid of the planning dept, but you haven't been able to back up anything you are saying!!
Been nice knowing you :)

Just look at the Town ,yes i can back it up or I would not say it,but not on the Forum or to any of the Public,I have already put my case forward.(Next)
Paul, some years back a potentially major investor in Dover was told the building he wanted to restore required a feature to be put back to it's original height. He did his research and found the original height and requested confirmation from the Planning Dept., that this is what they required.
They were shocked, as they were expecting something half the height.
Begged the question, why did they ask for something they hadn't done their homework on? Answer, incompetence.
There are other examples I know of, and I'm nothing to do with the place or the people there. No smoke without fire as they say.
