Can anybody identify any of the cross channel ferry seamen in this picture from around 1958? It may have been taken on the ss `LORD WARDEN`. Far right is my dad, who was quartermaster at the time.

A bit tricky this one Colin as they all appear to have the same initials!

I think they all changed their names by deedpoll Sid in 1948. Prior to that, they were all SR.

....PAUL, I should say the far right in BR uniform, and yes he does look like an egg head. Actually, his haircut reminds me of our leylandii hedge, which I can only cut up so far, as it`s too tall. I`ll assume he had a short barber. Won`t say too much though, it maybe Vic doing a day trip.

I joined the Lord warden in 1964 as steward and my father was Tiger on it from about 1954 so would have known him. After that we both went over to the Shepperton ferry for the next 3 years. In retrospect it was an adventure with lots of stories and escapades as in those days there was lots of room for enterprise. I moved over to chief cook ( because I could write the menus!) but the Shep galley was a nightmare in the hot weather as we had no vent but a lantern light up between the funnels. Foggy days were terrible.

Thanks for that David, and very interesting as my father was also on the Shepperton in the 60s. I never understood how that worked, swapping round on different ships, as there were some of them he never went on. He served on the `Maid of Kent`but not the `Invicta` for instance. He finished up on the `Normannia` in 1975.

Notwithstanding the size or age of ship my move from warden to shepperton was a step up. Most wanted to be on the shep which although small and old was regarded as the prize job. Probably because it had one trip each way in 12 hours so wasn't the mad rush that the other ships suffered with two. The Invicta was a "cattle ship" and we all dreaded the possibility of being moved to it. I speak from catering side of course but the train ferries were often laid alongside in dunkirk or even in the wellington dock - where once i was put over the side to paint it - wouldn't happen with today's contracts I suspect.

A more up to date picture, and this is from 1975. Sadly, my father second from left had less than a year to live, but does anyone know the other five gents, presumably seamen? I`m not sure if it was aboard ship, or a local pub.

Great photo, Colin.
My dad and grandad would have been in the same crew at the time (either on the Lord Warden, Invicta or Maid of Kent).
Vic: John Hopkins (who is still around in Deal) was a great mate of my late dad too.
Any idea what pub that is in the 1975 picture?
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Andrew, and it is indeed a small world on this forum at times. Have you any photo`s of your father and grandad from those times? It`s sad that even as recent as the above picture`s, time soon passes and it becomes increasingly difficult to identify people as they start moving away or dying off. Regarding the drinking location shown, I`m not sure whether it`s on board ship or a pub, so Vic could be right above.
