I really cannot see how the site is worth that amount of money, clearly those involved in the bidding war must have good reasons.

Just think how many apartments can be made out of the site or how many rooms if turned into a care home. I am not really surprised how much it fetched.

This must beg the question as to why KCC were willing to sell for a much lower price, they must have had it independently valued.

On Homes Under The Hammer councils often under value their properties, but they sometimes have clauses in the contracts which means they get more money if the place is resold after refurbishment.

Bearing in mind that artist's impressions tend to be better than the finished article I can only describe the architectural style as early Joe Stalin.

To put it bluntly these proposed flats look bloody awful, I can only hope the planning committee think the same.

Agreed if you are referring to the Townwall Street side, the new ones will look like a prison. I certainly would not buy one and only live there if it was the last resort.

For someone that only usually posts to correct the spelling of others the word is "stalag", no need to thank me.

Awful design. High density housing (a good thing) does not have to be like this. Why oh why can't we have architects proposing buildings of some architectural worth for once in the district. Good design tends to cost just as much as bad design to build, the architectural fees paling into insignificance against land and build cost. It doesn't have to be like this.

There seems to be general agreement about the appearance of the proposed blocks.

I agree with the Captain the design could be better.A person with vision could have designed something much more tasteful.I only hope the planning deptment and Councillors wil have vision .I live in hope .

Can a local authority refuse to grant planning permission purely because they don't like the appearance of the exterior?

Yes .The design. Has to be in keeping with the area.I would have thought with the hills as a backcloth would have sparked a more imaginative design. These are not social houses so the developer could have built better ..What is happening here the builder will squeeze every inch for profit.I talked
to Paul Watkins over the years and we agreed a good uplift for the area.
I wanted more trees and grassed areas.

I don't buy that only three people had objections at the community meeting, I don't think it was well known that this community meeting with interested parties was taking place either, It's the first I have heard of this particular meeting.
As a local resident I think the design is an insult and is replacing what was an eyesore with another eyesore, just this time it's with a soviet twist. The buildings are simply too big for the local area and I really hope the plans get knocked back.
I don't feel that the local infrastructure can support such a large residential development and the visual impact on the area would be too great.

First I heard of it was via this forum courtesy of Howard but no mention of the developer's being in attendance.
