I was only joking about the wallpaper Terry; I think it's a great idea.
I spoke some time ago to one of the Ladies at the White Cliffs creative guild and she was saying they can do artwork where it actually looks like a shop with someone working inside.
I thought that sounded fantastic, but I also think it will be good to have images of our (local) history - Crabble Corn Mill, Grand-Shaft and Drop Redoubt, some of the amazing views at the Western Heights.
The artwork that was being displayed at the Town Council offices last week, was a collaboration between English Heritage and the Girls Grammar School, maybe some more of that could be used.
Henry V111 stayed here, Henry 11 built it, lots of characters form history to draw upon.
I don't know if there's any partnership working with the DoverPride artists, but working together in partnership, always brings a greater element of success.

How about the following:
Bleriot's landing
Churchill
Olympic Flame landing in 1948
Hovercraft
Tour de France going through here

Good to see the old place being tarted up a bit at long last. Long way to go, though. A good arty kickstart for Dover, nonetheless.
By the way, Deal's two high street precinct areas are fast turning into a jungle of grim, chipboard dereliction at the moment - an after-dark no-go zone and a burgeoning magnet for teen-chav vandalism and general grotty ASBO-ness. Come on powers-that-be - we want to see life and arty vibrancy being breathed into the empty premises in all the district's towns. Take the landlords to task and sort out the buildings!

And how about this for a visual gag, blown-up and emblazoned on the chipboard on the site of The Crypt?
Taken early in the lovely old restaurant's first decade of dereliction.
I'm being serious, by the way. A photo of The Crypt would look quite good on the site of its past glory, and it's a bit of fun. After all, that dreadful, neglected site has been a Dovorian talking point for more than three decades. In fact it's one of the town's premier, if not the premier, dereliction sites, no less (although 'Damages' may dispute that particular accolade).
The same could be done on lots of empty Dover buildings - whack on black and white or colour photo of whatever significant shop/business etc stood there before. As I said, a bit of fun with a nice sense of place and history.
What does everyone reckon?
Cheers,
Andy

I think that would be a great idea Andy, it's one I've seen done in Europe during refrubishment or on empty buildings.

Not sure about he 'fun' and 'visual gag' given the poor people who lost their lives there....
A memorial would be more apt.
Been nice knowing you :)

Er, sorry, Paul - didn't mean any offence there. I am well aware of The Crypt's grim history.
But there really should be something there after 33 - yes 33! - years. And that includes a plaque on the wall to commemorate the people who lost their lives there.
Cheers,
Andy

good point about a plaque, one went up for the chinese illegal immigrants that tragically died, in next to no time.

Have got a feeling the owners are the Lukeys family, as in the former wine merchants. Not sure though. Someone better and wiser than me will surely know. The medieval Crypt is a listed (and listing!) building, you know. Yet another shameful example of the neglect of Dover's unparalleled history. And let's face it, on these terms and for sheer, miserable longevity, The Crypt knocks Snoops Wildlife Park of Castle Street into a cocked hat.

Can we keep this artwork-on-shops thread going please? Don't want this to drop off the edge of the website in a sea of single-line, in-jokey non-sequiturs.
Although I say it myself, it's a damn good idea.
Keep visible - keep the pressure on...

Why not someone approach Mr Godden and see if people can brighten up his corner of Bench Street/Townwall Street rather than the drab "development happening soon" green ??
Been nice knowing you :)

The area from the former Britannia, through Bench Street to the corner of York Street creates the very worst possible first impression of our town, a festering sore of dereliction. Absolutely vile and totally inexcusable.
And I really believe that after all these years of neglect it's having a profoundly damaging effect on the Dover psyche, let alone freaking out the poor trickle of optimistic 'tourists' unfortunate enough to wander through the rotten subway into Bench Street's Little Beirut.
No more 'bon mots', mealy-mouthings or 'public realm' this and 'redevelopment' that, nor all that 'empowering' marketing b*llocks. Please can the people we entrust with local power get this sorted - now!

Andrew here is a picture to brighten your day and stimulate the corpuscles. As it happens the picture is a bit too colourful and does not do full justice to the horror of the delapidation and the depression.
Thats a bit soft I'll have another go. Yes there we are..thats bit sharper.

Thanks Paul. Lovely. What a welcoming sight that is. The Gateway to England. We should all be so proud.

Bloody grim. Outrageous that people are able to get away with it.
