17:2393184Jimmy, I do shop in Dover as well as other areas.
I live in Deal so would it not be natural to support local enterprise in Deal.
That does not diminish my aspirations to see Dover thrive.
As for your comments on "my promises" I can only respond to what the private sector market wants or not.
Plans are & have been in place for private sector investment to take advantage of .

18:5193194things seem to be looking up in the town centre, hardly any empty shops.
i mentioned earlier about some outlets looking bright and cheerful, i forgot to mention mcdonald's who refurbished their branch a month or two back.
take a butchers at the town centres of towns similar in size to our own, then we come out well.

20:3593219Howard have you seen the Oriental shop in the old Dover Express office, newly painted it makes all the other shops look tatty, including ours.

20:3993221Dover does look much better these days. I don't get into town as much as I used to - work is a bit demanding at the moment, year end, politics - but it is a pleasure to do so when I can. Not half as dingy as it was!! And the weather picking up a bit has helped too!

22:3593236Ken,
I forgot to say, if you are going to fell a tree there is no need to climb 20 feet. You are supposed to cut it down from the ground up!!

08:2793261It's not Ron Player, it's Phillips and Drew who are moving.
Phillips and Drew took over the old Ron Player shop a few years ago.
It is good to see quite a few new shops opening - Dover is certainly bucking the trend, hope it continues and more people shop local.
What we need next is that double-fronted old shoe shop in Cannon Street sorted out and opened.
Thrive, not just survive should be the mantra.
Bringing back the vitality to the Town and making it a vibrant business community will help everyone.

08:4993269There isn't a policy of out-of-town-shopping - not for Dover there isn't.

08:5393271encouraged large stores out of town for whayever reason doesnt help the town.
its always been admitted on here that white cliffs business park will be encouraged
and so the town centre will struggle
but there you have it.
but the town centre looks btte than it did
greggs got the right idea opening late

11:5693296Now, there's a thought! If the town was a bit more creative about how it uses its time and people extended or developed their opening hours to meet local events and demand there would be an even bigger improvement.

14:2793312Keith you write absolute rubbish. There is no out of town retail policy at WBCP.
If there was the place would have been filled years ago, We regularly resist retail activity.
Why would we want out of town shopping & promote the same at the DTIZ?
You are a strange Fella.

15:0793316Phillips and Drew are moving in a couple of weeks into the old Corals shop, they have a sale on at the moment for those after a bargain. I have been told in the new shop they will be cutting down on the amount of clothing they sell.
Just to clear up an earlier point about the rates and charity shops. I checked this morning with management and we DO pay a percentage of the rates, they are not free.

15:2193317Like the old MHK shop, Corals needs a lot of work done.
BTW I see that the Endeavour pub further up the town has the builders in, what's happening to that I wonder?

15:2393318PaulW, if town-shopping were promoted at DTIZ, apart from the enormous bill of knocking down towers of standing concrete and building new shops, wouldn't this be taking away customers from Morrison, Iceland and Coop, and several others?
I base my calculation on the equation that people won't do the same shopping twice.
19 February 2011
15:2693319But they will take a look if there is enough to interest them, and they will use different shops for different things. Ther plain fact is that the more shops there are the more people will visit and the more shops will buy into the area.
