10:4532086From May 2010 all councils will have the choice to determine on how they should be governed by Elected Mayor who does not have to be councilor or a Leader of the Council with a similar structure as we have today. Councils do not need your approval to which structure they decide on, though will be looking for feedback. Doncaster Council already have an elected Mayor as do London they have revealed that key services have been improved in delivery without increasing income from such things as Council Tax.
Should we all have the right to decide just as we do in electing councillors on how we want to be governed by Elected Mayor or Council Leader rather than it being thrust upon us.
So the choices are
Elect a Mayor
Appoint Council Leader
Which is Dover going to adopt?.

11:2432087Elect a Mayor by all means, but surely the Leader of the (District) Council should be elected by the majority party.
If we elect a Mayor, then for the sake of continuity, the post must be kept for 4 years; you can't have a situation that exists as at present (especially if greater powers are going to be given to Town Councils), where the Mayor decides that something is a good idea so supports that with funding, then next year, another Mayor comes along and doesn't agree, so changes it - if this applied to funding an intiative or perhaps a body, then funding could dry up or be taken away after just one year - or much less than one year.

11:3132089Roger - I think there are two different things here. This is almost certainly about a leader/mayor at DDC level, nothing to do with the town Mayors who are in effect really Parish Council Chairmen with a bit of extra glitter.

12:1632095elected mayors are only effective at city or metropolitan level.
as barry said, the mayor in dover is much more a ceremonial thing.

13:0132100surely a mayor can only be effective with a large budget and a lot of political clout?
where would towns like dover find such money?
i hope that you realise what you have started here marek, victor will already be thinking of his campaign slogan.

whatever you do, when you get to the palace, wipe your shoes before entering and avoid swearing when you trip over one of those little dogs.

14:4232256VIC
This is getting a little boring, if your standing for a party, just announce it, this cloke and dagger stuff is so boring.
We see this secretcy over the priory play area
all that does is hype up tensions.
If, vic you want people to support you, then get that party to announce your being a candidate, but don't keep coming on here with this
Guys and girls I'v got a secret but im not telling you it!!!

15:0032259But we know from past experience that if Vic annouces a Party today, it will be different when the election comes!
Overall better for him to keep quiet, and not to sacrifice yet another deposit for an ego trip.
