Blimey quite a lot to reply on;
1; The sooner the revolution comes the better (Lesley)
2; Of course if we saw the fairness from those that can afford to help it would be less of a grind for those unable to afford
all the cuts.
3; Roger, you do make me smile, I'm sure at some point you will come out of the clouds into the real world,
Maggie sold off the council homes and never replaced them sadly once labour got in they continued the same policy

So who is exactly guilty of locking people into poverty?
Who is guilty of creating an underclass of benefit claimants?
It is every single person on here defending the failed welfare system.
You do not get people out of poverty with hand-outs. Only work can achieve that and the system we had locked people into a cycle of benefits.
It is totally unfair that people who work and pay their taxes are no better off, of worse off, than if they would be if on benefits.
Last year benefits rose three times faster than wages - that is wrong. Benefits should now be frozen for 3 years at least.
The IDS reforms are overdue but still not enough.
It is good to see that people who can work are being forced back into work and off benefits. It is a start in getting some balance back into the system.

I agree Barry, but the best way is for people (parents and children) to realise the benefit of a good education - at whatever school (comprehensive, grammer or academy).
A good education is generally the key - to a life away from poverty; it will give everyone a better chance of getting a better paid job; apprenticeships and good quality training will help everyone. I'm not talking about everyoner going to Uni, but practical skills too - building-trades can be especially useful.
To be put on a shortlist for a job and actually getting one can depend on how well you did at school/college. Messing around and playing truant will also keep you in poverty.

Barryw
It's fair to say many posters have been on here saying the system is a failed system, but its how you change it that remains important.
I.D.S. is coming across as point scoring/I don't care attitude which is unlike him, but suppose it's the nature of the job.

George Osborne: we will make work pay.........does he not know there are no jobs
Chancellor defends welfare reforms as necessary to fix a broken system as protests
George Osborne will insist welfare changes are a positive reform of a bloated system.
The chancellor will launch a counter-offensive in the increasingly bitter war over welfare,
accusing his critics of a cowardly defence of vested interests, and claiming the
increase in the personal tax allowance introduced this month will make work pay
Problem is there are not any jobs for 2,500,000 people.

The left is full of talk about care but if you lot really cared then you would support the kind of policies that will help get the economy back to health. The truth is you are all talk, its all about your own selfish consciences and not a more sustainable economy that can help those in genuine need. You lock people into poverty and low pay through ill-considered re distributive policies that are totally counter productive and you keep making those very same mistakes time and time,. Care, no you do not care a toss.
Not a surprise though.
It was the 20th century's greatest economist, Frederick Hayek, who said that 'if socialists knew anything about economics they would not be socialists'. So true.

Howard - at least I am only insulting people's views. Sometimes I read such rubbish that I cannot hide my sheer contempt for the political left.

I think you may be right David, the hypocrisy of the man is incredible - defend that if you can Reg, Keith Tom, MartinP and any other Labour supporter.

Roger, I don't understand why you would drag Guzzler into this.
If "the man" in question is Davis Miliband, I have never had a good word to say about him, with good reason.
But, hypocrisy is the very essence of British Politics. "The NHS will be safe in our hands."
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

No wonder David Milliband is packing his political career in, obviously he is financially better off having lost that leadership vote for which he must be profoundly grateful.
