After working for 17 weeks, Monday to Friday, some weekends, some early mornings and evenings, without any sort of pay, I have been sacked.
The Dover Chamber of Commerce President, The Chief Executive and the Strategic Director have decided that I should no longer work for the Chamber.
I could go into a long string of excuses, but I believe it is because I have my own mind and from talking to many, many businesses in Dover, know the sort of help they need and want.
I have been working on many initiatives that I believe will help move Dover forward on many levels, including a comprehensive "Plan for Action" for Dover, as part of the Town Centre Rejuvination project; run-down buildings, empty shops; finishing off my Dover Tourism Strategy; pedestrian signage from De Bradelei's to the Town and from Morrisons to the Town and many, many, others.
The Board members felt I hadn't signed up enough businesses to DBS and those in the 3 positions above, didn't like me emailing direct, those Board members.
The agreed salary was £24,000, back on launch day; last week I was invited to sign a Contract of Employment with a salary of £9,500 ! Last night I was sacked - a "disconnect" had occured.
I'm not a puppet, I have my own mind on what needs doing and this is confirmed every day by different business people; indeed the Mayor has used many of my intiatives to help improve areas of the town.
Ask any business I had signed up to DBS, or any of those who were members of the Dover Loyalty Scheme I ran for two years, what they think.
Even if I say so myself, Dover once again loses a hardworking "champion".
Who else would work their socks off for over 17 weeks ? - that's over four months, unpaid and then get the sack.
Roger

This was a decision made by the appropriate line management and, while I will ensure that I get all the facts, I will not be participating in any public discussion of this matter.

I wouldn't expect you to Barry, being the Chairman of the Chamber.
I have a very good idea what you will be told though.
If you'd like me to email you with what was said, I'll be happy to.

I as others mate am so sorry to hear this news and will repeat, IT'S their loss.
You could say this is how Dover is getting so run down, they don't want the right people in the right place.
I know the feeling if you remember.
Chin up Roger and think about you and Jean.
grass grows by the inches but dies by the feet.

Well Im stunned at this news - I cant beleive it. Thought Roger was doing very well and as ever is full of enthusiasm for Dover and always talks the town up. Im reeling for the moment but maybe you could do something with us Roger here on doverforum. Whatever happens anyway you are a very popular man and have very good support from all forumites. People are appreciative of all the efforts you have made.

all very strange, seems only yesterday that roger was feted by the born again chamber.
everyone knows roger's style with e mails etc from the "loyalty card" days.
how come he was employed because of that and now not with them?
Sorry to hear the news Roger. Try to stay positive if you can.

What will they do to Rogers office, make it into a one bedroom flat.
I am stunned! I was wondering if Dovers managers could go any further down in my estimation, and here we are.................
Roger - hugs to you.

Sorry to hear the news Roger,we may be politically at each end by I like many others had a respect for what you were trying to do and were doing. It seems to me if someone had you working on the projects without getting paid,I am afraid it stinks a bit.Talk about back stabbing.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

It's a disgrace and epitomises everything thats wrong with Dover and its so called leaders.
I'm not interested in tittle tattle nor am I interested in backroom politics what I,and hopefully many others are interested in,is stopping the decay and destruction of Dovers town centre. Roger has, for many years, attempted to reverse Dover Towns fortunes but without support and backing by the DDC DTC and Uncle Tom Cobbley he is *issing in the wind.

Gulp! Gawd! I'm Gobsmacked, practically rendered Speechless and as you all know thats really saying something
Roger I am so sorry to hear this awful news, I echo all the sentiments above, you are truly a Fine Ambassador for Dover. You know what they say, everything happens for a reason and although it is very early days yet something more deserving of all your hard work may just be waiting for you, good karma always comes to good people in the end. So spend some much needed time with Jean for now and who knows as PaulB said maybe you can do something with us here on Doverforum.
