And that is true Keith, I don't believe the Leadership does; you can't just fillibuster and shout at meetings, to get your own way. You can I guess, if it's your own business, but it doesn't create respect and the louder you shout, the less you're heard.
Maybe that's the difference - the Board of the Chamber of Commerce is made up of intelligent, successful businessmen, but none apart from Barry, are sole traders.
Working with Councils etc. is a different ball-game.
I wonder what next week wll bring.

i doubt the local press will make it a big story, a week old when the next edition comes out.
roger makes a valid point about the chamber, if people are part of a big concern they find it difficult to understand the problems of the sole trader.
Then what right do they have to interfere? If they want the right to do so they need the knowledge to back that up.

That is exactly the point Howard. Ever since the days of Alan Stibbe (who turfed out those he thought undesirable) the Chamber has been somewhat elitist. When they announced that Roger was being "employed" as a business manager to encourage small businesses I thought brilliant, a great move.
However, it seems that old ideas die hard and perhaps they don't want the hoi polloi after all. And before anyone tells me that I am out of touch I will say that I still keep my ear to the ground and I can quite categorically say that there are a number of members who are not convinced that the Chamber is forward thinking enough and does not represent them as it should.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Quelle surprise...............
I had dinner with Alan Stibbe last night. He refrained from making comment.

That must have been a long time ago Sid, I understood Bob MacGregor (or very similar) has owned it ever since we moved to Dover in 1994.
From various conversations with the two who sacked me, I always got the distinct impression that if people had signed up to the Chamber, it was then up to the business to contact the Chamber if they wanted anything, but every time they had, they had received no where near the level of help and support they expected; being at Whitfield, they also felt that it was too remote for a local business to have to go up there.
Many I had spoken to, who were members of the Chamber were very dissatisfied and were going to drop out when their membership renewal was due. I did say to them that when their membership runs out, don't just walk away, join DBS, it is part of the Chamber, so they will receive all the other services and facilites, but also a "personal" service from me.
Roger
Erm Roger, surely you should have been advising/persuading them NOT to leave the Chamber. To suggest they effectively allow their CoC membership to lapse and then move their business to your 'club' would be, to me, totally unacceptable behaviour under any circumstances.

It's all part of the Chamber of Commerce Sid, so they weren't leaving the Chamber at all; the Chamber would still benefit by having their membership dues too of course.
If they were leaving the Chamber because they were dissatisfied with the lack of help or support, then surely it is better to (re)join the Chamber, but via DBS - it's all the same bank account - but with a better "personal" service.
Many local small businesses who joined the Chamber were absolutely disappointed with the Chamber support they received.
To call it "my club" is disengenious, it is/was a service of and a part of the Chamber.

Sorry to resurect this, but I've just read the Express and Cameron MacSween is still insisting I resigned because of the money.
"The Manager of Dover Business Support has acrimoniously parted company with the group after just 4 months in an apparant dispute over pay".
This is so wrong Yam, you have been sucked in by Macsween - he and his side kick are lying.
They sacked me - pure and simple; all the lies and bullshit in the world won't change that fact.
I know I should rise above this, but I am so incensed.
Money had nothing to do with it at all; I'd spent two years running the Dover Loyalty Scheme - all without pay and then the Dover Business Support for over 4 months unpaid - not as a volunteer, but happy to work unpaid until such time as a decent salary was able to be offered.
Do you think a measly £9,500 would make me resign from a job I absolutely loved ? God this man is unbelievable.
Cameron MacSween is telling lies, pure and bloody simple.
Good news on the front page about the market coming to Dover, but he is taking all the credit when it was my idea and I had done most of the prepatory work.
I am so angry at this man; he should have been honest and said that I was sacked because I wouldn't spend all the time recruiting businesses instead of working on and developing projects to help improve the town and helping and supporting businesses; I wouldn't just accept everything they said, which also upset them.
This is so wrong.

So sorry to learn that MacSween thought it necessary to lie to the press regarding your dismissal or resignation from the post.In the interest of fair reporting the Express should air your side of the story.
I think those of us who are lucky enough to call you a friend know who is telling the truth and it 'aint' MacSween!!

Marek

Thank you Marek - that is very much appreciated.
I spoke with Yam, last Friday morning - I'm disappointed that it was reported in this way - and that's an understatement.
