10:518361Was sad to see today that the Kent Messenger Group are closing down their operation in Dover. All personel are gone elsewhere it seems, save for the lonely figure of stalwart reporter Graham Tutthill, who will continue on there in solitary confinement for the time being.
This is very bad news for our local prestige apart from anything else, as Dover is already feeling the pain from the recession with a number of different outfits closing. The Dover Mercury was always a fixture in this town and from my point of view had an input in what I did here, in a number of ways, so very sad to see the local office go.
Hard to imagine such an organ as a Dover Mercury continuing to be significant without a presence in the town it represents.

11:068364I agree Paul.
It is very sad indeed and although costs were obviously a major factor, it must make a difference to articles and advertising revenue, so may well be counter-productive.

11:108366sorry as i am to see it go, i have always been surprised that a town our size could support 2 local organs plus free sheets.
there can only be so much sales and advertising revenue to go around.

21:138394Very sorry to see them go - my very best wishes to all at the local office. Hope that they continue success elsewhere in the KMG as May has proved.
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

09:268423Yes indeed, I think you refer to Mary there Buddy. Yes one time local doe eyed roving reporter Mary Graham, a tip top and popular frequenter of all the ol forumite parties, she is nowadays working for the Kent Messenger and doing well. I thought The Mercury hit something of a peak with the chemical combination of Mary and GrahamT. Aaah heady days!
Did the arrival of YOUR DOVER with its inroads into the small pot of ad revenue finish the local office off?

18:028448One wonders if the Dover express office may go the same way as they are owned by a bigger organization may be looking to cut costs.?

10:278482If that is actually true Vic then as far as I know I will be the only media mogul(!) trying to bring local editorial featues and stories to the attention of the masses that is actually based here in Dover..oh the shock and horror of it all !!
..think of the responsibility!

15:238497Are you allowed to inform us of your learned source Vic?
Only it's quite a serious piece of news which would be far stronger if it were substantiated by someone 'in the know'.

17:248508So much for the DOVOR office, what about the DOVER office?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

19:168519HE did not tell me that I could not report what he said to me so Yes I will tell you it was MrSimon Finlay himself the EDITOR.
I then went on to asked could we stop it ,he said itmight be possible but it was down to the cutbacks needed at this time. I think we should write to their H.Q. about it THE Dover EXPRESS is a DOVER Paper it was not long ago that some of you were at the 150yrs birthday of the paper in our town I would like to lead a campaign to save our paper, but as we all can see by the votes I have been geting in the elections over the past few years I am not the person to do that.
So it is up to you all if you think like I do about the D.E. then fight for it.
Thank you, I remain yours faithfully Vic matcham

22:018531the sad thing is that a lot of us get our news first on here.
i realise that there is still a large number that purchase one or both of our local papers, but they only need to lose a certain percentage to make things not viable anymore.
just as an example, we get press releases from DDC and customs on here, well before the press get a chance to pu blish.
i only buy one of them now and again.
sad, but that is modern times.

08:598545We're not talking about the Mercury and Express closing are we ? we're just being told that the expense of the local office(s) has now become too dear, especially as so few of you are buying either paper.
Like I've said on numerous times, on various threads - "use it or lose it".
If you don't buy a paper, there'll be no paper to buy.
