Re: Dover Town Neighbourhood Forum on Thursday 3rd June 2010
Time: Refreshments from 6.00pm with a 6.30pm start
Location: Dover Town Council Offices, Maison Dieu House, Biggin Street, Dover.
Topic: Litter - is it a problem?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have great pleasure in extending an invitation for you to attend the next public meeting of the Dover Town Neighbourhood Forum on Thursday 3rd June 2010.
Refreshments will be available half an hour before the meeting starts; this provides a chance to meet local councillors from county, district and town. You will also have the opportunity to talk to a representative from the Dover District Community Safety Partnership. The agenda for the meeting will be available on the night.
The topic for this meeting is..
'Litter - is it a problem?'
This in response to concerns expressed at the last forum meeting about littering in the area.

Well there we are above, the latest meeting detail coming your way soon. Although some of these NForum meetings were well attended in the past, the last one or two were sparsely attended. At one time they were fairly well packed...but it very much depends on the Topic and if its well errr sort of 'topical' on the day
....and of course you meet allsorts there. Heavens!! I even took that picture of Gordon and Keef now showing on frontpage and in the Who's Who at one of these meetings in 2007...so gosh you have to watch your step as they let desperadoes like these guys in
I did not attend the last one on JOBs but Roger said on another thread that there were just three there. So very much depends on the TOPIC and if its highly relevent at the time. Is Litter currently high on peoples agenda??

is it possible the removal of bins from the town centre by ddc is partially responsible for the excess litter?
The question is, why would anyone think that litter isn't a problem? So, IMHO, not off to a good start.

Well done PaulB for putting this up, I was going to but have been very busy.
I think litter is a good topic for a Neighbourhood Forum - every one grumbles about it and there must be a thousand opinions as to how to reduce it, so come along, you may have an idea that no one has thought of.
More bins is an obvious answer, but also promoting Dover as a lovely Town, with some banners of local scenes and images with an abundance of flowers etc. so it creates a picture of how beautiful Dover could and should be.
They do this in Broadstairs and it seems to work - much less litter and a cared-for looking Town.
When I was DBS Manager, part of my 23 initiatives was about litter; I created a banner to be put at various strategic places around Town reminding people NOT to drop litter, but put it in a bin - and make sure there was a bin close by.
This of course died when I was sacked and I can't see it coming back, as after Spencer has worked his socks off for the market (but wrongly directed by Cameron), he'll have to spend all his time recruiting businesses, but that won't actually help businesses or Dover' just the Chamber.
A classic case of the bosses not having a clue, sacking the one person who did know and then making all the wrong decisions. Yeah I know, sour-grapes, but what I'm saying is still true.

I hope you will allow me top comment more in general terms on the n/hood Forum.
Before that I do understand your upset at Barryw and the chamber of commerce not requiring your services any longer.
But apart from the chamber there needs to be some joined up thinking.
If we want to get tourists into the town we have to encourage that to happen, and market it correctly, a number of people can help in this(not just the chamber)
and with this there comes a real need to do something about the tired looking buildings in the Town.
Litter in general, yep more bins, but it needs to go far wider than that, we need to get into pre schools, primary schools to get kids at an early age on the issues around litter, it will be a long term thing, but over time hopefully will get through to the children, who would embarrass there mums/dads who drop litter.
Maybe more adverts on the effects of dropping litter around the town.
fines etc, get a few fines in place and people will think twice about it.
Policies of DDC also need to be looked at as i'v said on here before, the policy of moving business to Whitfield is fine in itself, but taking these business's from the town will and has a serious effect on the town centre.
Theres a few thoughts to be going on with

with you there keith, get the kids involved when very young.
May I respectfully suggest that the title of this meeting is not sexy? An important issue, certainly, but not a title to get bums on seats.............

Any suggestions Bern ?
If there is a "sexy" title for these meetings, let me know and I'll suggest it to KCC.

Hope not too many people complained Keith that the meeting wasn't the same as on the agenda !
I think KCC would like to try to be a little more subtle.
Maybe it's a point to raise with them though - not about sex, but about making it sound "sexy".

Istill think there a few things to face up to;
1; does this board realy have any teeth?
2; What does it want to achieve?
3; Is KCC realy behind it, if so why not fund it properly
4; is publicity for meetings sent wide enough
just a few thoughts from me

kieth, you forot one is it a quango, if so the condems are cutting funding.
Hooray for the Condems!!!!! Mind you , the media are already struggling to understand the deep pile of s**t Labour has left us in. Obviously got so used to being lied to, they struggle to deal with the truth. Still, look on the bright side. In the next five years we will turn the corner back to prosperity again. Something to look forward to eh?

KCC isn't a qango.
Neighbourhood Forums aren't qangos.
I agree that inventive ways of communicating the fact they are on, must be found.
There is a lot of very useful info given out at them; the next one should be well attended if people want to grumble about litter and find out what can be done about it.

roger, why worry about litter when theres much more inportent things to worry about in and around dover, like redevlopement and infrusruture.
I agree with Roger.
KCC isn't a quango, but it is a waste of money.
NF's aren't quangos, but they are a waste of money.
Brian, agree 100%
