For me the really sad thing is not that the flag looks so awful, it is that no club player or member has seen fit to lower and remove it. That tatty flag gives the impression they have no sense of pride in their club's image.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I don't understand, I have experience of other countries and they respect and look after their flag.
Yes, Great Britain has a varied history and not always Great, but we should still be proud of who we are and a flag is a representation of that. If you've ever been to a citizenship ceremony (I have) many of the attendees are so proud to get their nationality and call themselves British, it makes you ashamed of how some native Brits treat their flag.
Not that you can go very easily at the moment, but for example, if you go to Poland around the start of May, 90% of houses and shops / offices will have their national flag on display to celebrate their independence day.
In fact, in their equivalent of B&Q they have a section where you can buy flags of all sizes and holders to put on you house!
If you don't want to or can't be bothered to look after it, just don't display it, simple.

I agree Sue, whoever runs the club obviously does not care about the image it gives of the club. Surely it should only take a few minutes to lower and remove or replace that bunch of rags.

My favourite new phrase is flagshagger. As in over nationalistic types.

Being in a sticky beak I have just made a comment on the Dover Sharks FB page, at least they can not say they did not know how awful it looked.

I had this reply, bit of a weak excuse even though they have serious clubhouse problems.
"Dover Sharks RFC
Hi Jan, thank you for this, it can be looked in to as it have been overlooked since the club have been closed since November. We will take it down when we can. Unfortunately at the moment the club had a disasterous flood when the snow hit, which has completed gutted our entire clubhouse with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage. Dealing with this and saving our club has been our priority, our apologies."

Perhaps from Dave Allen? He's a good guy. As weak excuses go, it sound a little on the strong side to me.

That flag was in shreds last October, so must have been heading that way for months, if not years. So, though I'm sympathetic, a recent destructive flood cannot be the reason. That's a fairer answer, don't you think?
To be honest, I've no idea why they should even fly the Union flag: their club colours would be more appropriate.
