05:3227067A female muslim convert has been denied access to a public swimming pool in France for wearing a head to toe swimsuit. The Mayor of Emerainville said the 35 year old woman was not allowed to swim in the pool while wearing the burkhini as the outfit was unhygienic and potentially harmful to other swimmers. The woman has complained to the police.
There was a photo of the burkhini but I couldn't copy it as I am still using my sons laptop and don't know my way around it yet,,,,

21:0927157How exactly is this less hygienic than:
Normal swimming costumes?
The sort of head to toe one piece suits and bathing hats competition swimmers wear?
Little (and not so little) boys/girls urinating in the pool?
Actually little boys and girls full stop?

22:2227163with a normal swimming costume their is nothing worn underneath, the fear with the fullly clothed is that they have last weeks underwear on.

22:3627165I'm with Ross on this, I think they should have rolled their necks in. What about those new go-faster swin suits that take ages to put on would they have been banned, probably not.

00:0727168A little irrational Howard - who knows how long it is since someone washed their swimming cossie? Or do you have to demonstrate that it is freshly laundered?

07:0127181I believe that because the French want to ban the burkah as an item of clothing in public, that when this woman turned up wearing this outfit, they (to my mind rightly) banned that too, as it was transferring the burkah principle to the swimming pool.
You wouldn't notice whether she had a bomb under it either.
On a side issue, do the Australians have it right when they say:
'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '
'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'
'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'
'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'
'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'
'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'
'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'
Is this racist or common sense ?

I fully understans where your coming from, my worry is, not about the AUSTRalian viewpoint, but your reference to "she may have a bomb "
It is just clothes that individual decides to wear.
To my mind I think the French have overplayed this one, and the Australians are in danger of doing the same.
Sure this won't go away.

09:1227199In the history of all forums this type of thread must have cropped up time and time again.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
If you go on holiday or to reside in any other country then you obey their laws and their customs and respect it whether it be the Middle east or Peru. If you don't then your in the poo poo.
Other people come to the EU and feel they can do what they want and how they want.

11:1927202My initial reaction was that the hygiene issue was just a fig leaf and 30 years ago the same would have been said [by these type of bigots] about turbans.
I also read 'muslim convert' as someone who was not an immigrant but a French national. Maybe I was making assumptions. Let's not make assumptions yeah and live and let live eh.

12:2227209some time ago it became a fashion to wear cut down jeans in swimming pools, this was soon banned.

16:3127217Live and let live would be a great principle, one that I embrace, if others would also abide by it. Sadly, and horribly, I have to agree that the When In Rome principle should stand.
