11:0840764Does anyone carry on the age old tradition of Pancake Day or are you like me and had to be reminded of what today was?
I haven't had any pancakes or crepes for ages but have to admit I am partial to the ones they serve with Cointreau and cream in Paris!

15:0740772Mmmmm, Crepes in Avignon - a happy distant memory, plus lots of fresh cherries by the kilo.
Tried to do a few last year myself - the pan still bears the scars

15:5640773Usually yes. But we also have them at other times too. I had better check with my Domestic Engineer that they are on the menu for tonight.

17:0940777Ah yes pancakes are good...didnt have any but all sound very tasty above.
Big Dave I dont think it commemorates any saint as far as I know, but it is regarded as a last opportunity for feasting before the arrival of Lent tomorrow. You were allowed a bit of a 'pig out' before the austere weeks of Lent during which you had to sacrifice your favourite foods and so on. Im trying to remember now from my distant past, but I think Lent lasts 6 weeks . It starts tomorrow so today we feast.
During Lent this time around several Bishops have suggested we give up Ipods and Mobile Phones for the whole period. There you are..so spoketh the Bishop.
As if that was likely to happen...and certainly not amongst teenage girls

17:4440782i thought it was just a tradition started in the middle ages, nothing to do with religion.

18:0040784As far as I know it is religious Howard as they even had religion in the middle ages. Without the flagellation of austerity and sacrifice, as is often suggested by religion, I doubt if anyone would be fasting. The pancakes came before the fast. But i suspect originally it might not have been pancakes..they may have come with Lyons Corner House.

18:1940789Pancakes tonight with lemon, clotted cream and honey & ginger ice cream. Yep, well over the top but if I am going to observe Lent (well, I might

) then I need to massively over-indulge on the pancake front.
There is only one thing left to say........ YUMMY!!!!!!!

19:0440797i stand corrected, paul is right, it is an old christian tradiation.
checked with a church going neighbour who tells me that it was comandeered as a protestant thing at the time of henry the eighth, but had been a roman catholic tradition well before that.
i used to work with an irish catholic girl many years a day that always gave up cigarettes for lent.
the only problem was that she didn't smoke in the first place.

19:3140807Shrove tuesday comes from shrive tuesday which means to confess all sins. In oldendays the people would use all the ingredients that have been given up for the feasting period.
We are having pancakes tonight after tea with a choose of lemon, strawberries or sugar.

20:4340818I have now done my research and it is Saint Juliana of Nicomedia day - she is the saint of childbirth and sickness.
So... if you eat too many pancakes and feel sick or pregnant - pray to st Juliana for relief!
