Seems to be little known but as part of a Battlefield bike ride this week, HMS Bulwark should be delivering 300 cyclists to Dover at 6:30pm on Saturday 31st May.

What if anything are we doing to celebrate this?

Seems to be top secret, but I wonder if the Hercules doing circuits is something to do with it ??

Paul I saw the Hercules doing circuits and I think there was probably more than one. Not sure what all that was about but there we are. I managed to get a weak picture but it's probably not worth reproducing.
Good luck with your weekend on Western Heights.

i was told last year that HMS Bulwark was coming this summer but we couldn't find any details of the visit from anywhere. I think security now take precedence over everything.

Well done Paul a superb set of photographs, questions need to be asked as to the lack of publicity for the event. What must the cyclists think of the people of this town with the lack of support we gave them. HEADS SHOULD ROLL.

Thanks for posting the photos. It looked like a spectacular event. Were lots of people watching from the drop redoubt ? Interesting to see how the ship swallowed up the lading craft. I wonder what happened to them inside ?
Where on earth was the publicity for this?

A great event but a major embarassment to the town - for the 300 cyclists to totally outnumber the attendees was an outcry and feel sorry for the people collecting for the charity.
The Lord Warden, Mayors and all of the dignitaries should have been there

Been nice knowing you :)
It's a disgrace.

Gawd, where are all the publicity people for this town? Hiding under their desks? I wonder who was in charge of publicizing this event? A bloody disgrace

The question is just who in authority knew about it. Guzz tells me that there was not even anything mentioned on Bulwarks website...
Were DDC, KCC or DTC told? I presume DHB must have been told as Bulwark came into the Habour (when were they told?), did they inform anybody?
Just who on earth is responsible for the mess?

The first I heard of it was the other day when an RN chappy was asking me for directions to the Old Admiralty Pier for a 'recce' and briefly mentioned the 300 cyclists but no details. Would it have been the DHB who were responsible for publicizing the event? A terrible shame and a great lost opportunity.

What is particularly gutting about the whole sorry affair is that the cycle race was organised to raise healthcare facilities for injured service men, obviously mainly returnees from Iraq and Afghanistan. They are currently raising money for a new swimming pool and other healthcare facilities at Headley Court rehabilitation centre.
After a spectacular landing the cyclists walked around with their charity collection boxes looking in vain for donations. With somewhere around 200 people watching the event the cyclists would have received absolutely paltry sums towards their cause; I doubt if Dover donated a hundred pounds that night. They should have raised four figures here.
What a dreadful image Dover authorities projected that night to the charity, the MOD and to our own populace. Given the almost total lack of official support at the event by those who us tax-payers fork out for, it was almost embarrassing to be a Dovorian.

Also taking into account the fact that Dover has always been a 'garrison' town until recently with obviously very strong naval connections.

Here are a few more pictures for you including half a dozen from the Drop Redoubt on Sunday:

You'll need to go to the 'Dover, Kent' gallery on the right hand side.

Phil. I dont think it reflects badly on the people of Dover. Somebody boobed, whether it was the organisers, the Harbour Board or one (or all) of the Local Authorities, I dont know. That is what we should focus on, who organised it and what did they do, or not do, to drum up support in Dover....
