22:165789By hospital do they mean a big building with beds or a polyclinic from which to send people half way across the county?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

22:165790This does sound like the proposal for some health care to be provided in 'a central Dover location' that they kept refering to in their dubious questionaire

22:285791that was my secondary reaction.
furthermore, KCC are not providing the funding, so why was it such a big story this morning?
my initial reaction was, central dover, hospital completed 2011,wow!!
then doubts crept in.
that terry nunn bloke will interpret the announcement for us in due course.

07:045795This is the text of an email I received on Friday:-
"Hi
Just returned from Maidstone ... I did it, We are to have a Community Hospital in Dover by 2011. It will be in the Dover Town Centre.
Lorraine"
As I understand it, all that has happened is the the KCC planners having given their blessing for it. It's still down to the PCT, however having been given this green light it's now certain to go next to the health centre.
My own view is forget ASDA and stick it in DTIZ.

09:315806A town centre site limits room for growth so it does indeed beggar the question of whether it is a true hospital or not. A polyclinic (or a jumped up one) is more likely in the town centre. I noticed the wide range of costings quoted, £12m to £18m, up from the original £8m. While a big improvement, I am still not sure just how much can be obtained even at the upper end of this scale. I do wonder whether we will just end up with 'a pig in a poke'.

10:165810Barry a thread we can agree on. From the very start of the so called consultation period all of PCT's questions and steered to answers have been directed towards cutting the services in Dover down to a polyclinic in the town centre. As I have said before, the very fact that they asked about care in hospitals by offering the options of Ashford, Margate or at home (no mention of Dover) indicated that they never intended to make such care available here. It is equally obvious to everyone else that to get the sort of hospital Dover deserves it needs to be sited close to the town, on a site that offers a range of easy transport options and has room to grow. Whitfield and Burgoyne fit the bill, Maison Dieu Road does not.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

10:195811Why not bang it on the DTIZ site it would be a darn sight more welcomed by the people of Dover than a bloody ASDA would be.

11:075819Couldn't possibly comment Jeanette, I'm just sad that it all got political and fragmented what should have been a combined effort.

12:375823no beds
no parking
open during the day.....
no room for expansion
contrary to the wishes of 28000 local people.
we have been telling them and telling them but the report which I have that was given to the KCC had major inaccuracies and omissions- it even states that there was no available option at whitfield - in June I sent them the name and address of the owner of the site that is anxious to see a hospital for dover on his land . they didnt even mention it or speak to him!!! - proper investigation was cut off by those keen to see the brook house car park disappear! even the MD of the district council said that parking was not an issue at a meeting as the asda car park and demolition of manley house could provide spaces.
parking will inevitably be on the streets and outside the houses just like canterbury but much worse.

KCC backs town centre hospital plan
The existing Buckland Hospital - the council wants a new one by April 2011
by Graham Tutthill
Kent county councillors have given their "strong support" to plans for a £20million community hospital in a Kent town centre.
At a meeting of the KCC Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee, they said they wanted to see a central site in Dover developed for "a modern community hospital for the people of Dover and surrounding area by 2011".
Their decision followed a meeting in May when they called on the East Kent Coastal Primary Care Trust, the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Trust and Dover District Council to work together to find a site for "community hospital services".
Since then, a number of sites have been investigated, including the existing Buckland Hospital site.
But the authorities favour land next to Dover Health Centre in Maison Dieu Road and councillors were told on Friday that because that site is already in public ownership, work on building the new hospital could start next year and would be completed by 2011.
Former Public and Patient Involvement Forum (PCT) member Lorraine Sencicle made a passionate plea to the committee to back the scheme.
Reg Hansell, who is campaigning for a "proper hospital" on a greenfield site at Whitfield, said the town centre site would be landlocked, parking would be difficult and there would be congestion on the town's one-way system.
The committee was told that with land aquisition and infrastructure issues, work could not start on the Whitfield site until 2012.

10 September 2008
10:415876What is it with some people? Having read the story posted above by Jeanette it seems obvious to me that Dover is going to get a community hospital - not a polyclinic - in the town centre, where most people (especially those who don't have cars and there are quite a lot of them in parts of Dover) can access it on foot or by public transport, resulting in fewer journeys to Margate, Canterbury and Ashford. And it will be built within three years. But still we're not satisfied, it seems. Can't people support something for once? By the way PB, sorry I haven't posted lately - been enjoying my holiday in sunnier parts of the world.

11:155877Deal has a hospital and that has beds and is open 24hours. Someone please define the difference between a hospital and a clinic.
The Doctors consortium wanted beds too.
More than 50% of the people that need it live outside dover in the villages like whitfield, sandwich and the kingsdown , st margarets.
parking will be horrendous esp with the loss of all the business parking and tourist parking at Russell St when the 4th in town supermarket hits the deck!!!
Crooked decision making here so why didnt they listen....?
