I agree with what you say Sid, but there are many thousands of ordinary people who still vote Labour and will continue to vote Labour whatever happens to them or the Country, they just can't bring themselves to vote any other way.
It is democracy where people can vote for who they want to, but if you can't change people's minds because it is ingrained in them that they must vote a certain way, what can you do ?
I do find it very surprising that Labour kept as many seats as they did and I'm not going to insult people who voted for them, but in many cases they do seem to keep voting for the same party that keeps them down.

Stephen Byers? He lied too. How many do you need before accepting the truth? I could go on as this is all in the public domain.

the fact of the matter is that the blues and reds have a hard core of support that will vote for their party regardless.
the politicians have to convince the wavering voters that they represent their interests best.
mr cameron and mr brown clearly did not.
Nor did Gordie. All three failed on that score.

While loving someone deeply gives you courage" - Laozi
Jhg, I dont class you as old there are older than you in there. im simply saying how can labour say they understand the younger generation when they locally or nationally do not have any cllrs themselfs?
Melissa, beware, our JHG is indeed exceedingly well worn through time, he may even be as old as me!!!
Seriously though, it's not how old someone is, it's how old their thinking is that counts.
Labour does have councillors, albeit at Town Council level in our district.

Syd I am no where near your age,Mel I have 3 daughters number 1 has just had a baby.number 2 is Gay and number 3 is a Goth,I don't understand any of them!Seriously I do and I know this town has nothing for them except pubs.
Roger you make it sound that voting for Labour is a serious illness,I am proud to be a Socialist and no matter what you say to me that will never change, also remember there were thousands that voted for Maggie even when she decimated this country did you wonder why,Labour actually won 12 Councils last week and I think 8 of them were Tory Controlled before no doubt Barry will correct that if it is wrong. Why the difference.
Nationally the Labour Party were blamed for the MP's fiddles even though it was cross party and because of the down turn in the economy, which it didn't start but came up with a plan as the banks were close to shutting down and you can imagine the outcome of that.Locally people know that Labour Councillors are normally at the heart of thier communities,in Tower Hamlets you only see a Tory at election time, while I am there 365 days. That is why Labour incresed its vote Locally.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
but please name young cllrs we have in dover under the age of 30??????

John - No, all parties were rightly blamed for the expenses scandal.
Yes people did keep on voting for Mrs T simply because she saved the UK economy from the disaster of the 70's Labour Government. A great lady and the best peacetime PM of the 20th century. Now another Labour Government has wrecked the economy and we have a fiscal crisis greater than at any time in our history.
As for Councils, yes the Conservatives were defending a 'high tide' from 4 years ago and with the general election there was a swing back to Labour in some areas. Some people never do learn!

Mel you are right Politics is not a young persons game,I am proud that 2 of my daughters have told me they voted Labour,my step daughter would only vote if the person standing had black face make up and was called something like Arthur Strangler.
But thier is a glimmer of light because youngsters are getting intrested again, one of my young friends is Danny Lee who is on the Youth Parliment and when we had our street stall we had 4 or 5 new younger memebers there. It is a start, but if you could find someone young and keen to stand in Tower Hamlets I would pass my job on,what is strange that the person I would like to lead the Labour Party is Alan Johnson,a good working class guy but at 59 is seen to be too old for the job.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

About 7-8 months ago all District Cllrs were asked if they would get involved in a Youth Shadowing Programme where a young person follows the Cllrs around and see what they really do.Only 2 Cllrs took it up,myself and a lady Con Cllr,we had to be crb checked I now have 5 or 6 of those and it was going ahead then someone called an election,so it was cancelled,so out of 45 Cllrs only 2 were prepared to do it,that doesn't encourage youngsters.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
Thankyou finally got the answer i was looking for. Brian now that would be telling!.............................................................................................

melissa
if you know of anyone in their twenties that is interested in becoming a councillor send them long to their local party who would welcome them with open arms.
In the next four years we will look back and realise labour werent so bad . With a new leader labour will enjoy opposition .
