PaulB -I wasn't making a dig at the Red Arrows, as such, though it may have come accross like that, you are right the problem is the communication and expectation levels it created.

Hi, All. I was invited by the President of the Calais Towns grouping to join them in Calais/Sangatte overnight Friday/Saturday . The invitation extended to returning via the Official helicopter escorting the Bleriot plane across the Channel. I have shots pre flight , Taking off , mid channel and just about to cross the White Cliffs- then ran out of battery Power. If anyone can explain of how to download and can blow trhem up, I'm happy to share what happened in France pre takeoff through to landing at DoYRMS. Also some excellent shots of ATC groups at the Bleriot re-dedication ceremony with Louis Bleriot's grandson the Italian Chargee d'afffaires, and the splendour of the site [one week after the bombsite photos].

More importantly Dover owes a big thank you to Paul Tipple of Cresting who put the weekend together. He has worked tirelessly to give Dover the World wide coverage. It was a tragedy bad weather i.e. winds prevented some major contributions coming off . The pre event party for pilots in Calais was packed out with over 300 pilots/ support team.
The microlyte team were particularly dissapointed.
Pilots at Bleriot Plage were frustated from 5.00am that they could not take off. The French authorities shut down the airstrip at 6.00pm leaving Mikhael Carlsonn and his team Stranded until Sunday Morning. The early flight that made it -the French plane- was only allowed to go by the officials the Aero Club de France on the understanding that the pilot was SENSIBLE, SERIOUS AND CAUTIOUS.

Thanks Paul.
Sometimes we need to take risks; we can't be covered in cotton wool all the time or we'd never get anywhere.
As you say, disappointing about some of those weather-related prioblems, but an outstanding week-end for the Town and the people.

It was an excellent weekend and the fireworks were some of the best I have seen. It really showed that Dover can put on a good event. Congratulations to all who worked so hard to bring it off.
I was disappointed to see many shops closing at 5.30 (especially tea shops) as this only added to the sense that the town and seafront are two different, an unconnected, places.

Good point Mark, but then it needs a co-ordinated central body, a Dover Business Support Body to talk to the businesses about this and all sorts of things.
It's unlikely that businesses will do it on their own, but if they know that other businesses will stay open until say 6.30 or 7pm, it might work.

It was mainly Crestling with the event organisation with a lot of help from volunteers from DDC (and an odd one from another council!!) who made a lot of it possible

Paul , you are right about DDC staff supporting the events. They were tremendous with support from an other council!! Add the ATC and the public spirited approach was well on display. Everyone needs thanks.

20:4629017Oh dear. Cresting Ltd who put together the display has gone into liquidation. The outlay just didn't get the returns to make it profitable, a combination of the weather and poor ticket sales put paid to it. Much more detail here:

It doesn't bode well for any future major events projected for Dover. DDC appear to have made 'emergency payments' to Cresting Ltd too.

21:4529021sounds to me like that 250 quid a head for the nosh up was too cheap.
in fairness to ddc, there is no way that they would have known about any problems with cresting.
they would only have done a credit check if they were selling to them.

22:0429023There were rumours on the day that this was likely to happen, especially with refunds fiasco.
I would have thought though that for such a weather dependant event that insurances would be in place ??
Been nice knowing you :)

22:0729024all of our summer sporting events have insurance cover for such eventualities.
a day lost in a test cricket match through to rain would involve refunds of well over a million quid.

08:0829039It is a big shame though that Paul (Tipple) couldn't make a financial success of it.
There were intentions to have a French, Italian and British marquee on the seafront, in the end only one marquee was there and that was hard work to fill it. I don't know whether the cost of booking a space in the marquees was too expensive, but people must remember this is Dover not Hampton Court Palace.
I appreciate that various factors came into play that he could not have accounted for, mostly the weather, but many were put off by the cost of entrance fee at the DOY of £10 and parking of £6.
I know these were reduced on Sunday, but advance publicity of say £5 entrance fee would have attracted a lot more people - it was almost prohibitive for a family of four or six to go there.

12:5529051I believe that Crestings will forward more bills to DDC as the shortfall as reported today is possibly only the start. The fireworks for instance cost a reputed £30,000 which is I believe 5 or 6 times more than the regatta yet although different lasted the same amount of time.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

17:0829062surely if a company has gone into liquidation then no more invoices can be sent.
if invoices were sent before the liquidation, then they are due for payment.

17:3529068Fraid your wrong Howard, the Receiver or liquidator owes a duty to creditors to collect all debts incurred before his appointment whether an invoice has been sent or not. The services have still been provided by the Company and therefore will require payment.
In the big picture its not like the million quid the DDC lost when the Icelandic Banks went bust, this is mere thousands.
